Ciara Mageean 1992 - 2026 🕊️ We are devastated to report that Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34. Last summer Mageean, who represented Ireland at two Olympics and stood on the podium at multiple major championships, revealed that she had cancer. Her biggest victory came at the 2024 European Athletics Championships, where she secured the gold medal for Ireland in the 1500m. A statement on her social media said: "At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. "A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam."

Peres Jepchirchir, the 2021 Olympic and reigning world marathon champion, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit. The 33-year-old, who has a marathon PB of 2:14:43 and is currently ranked ninth on the all-time list, tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya prior to the Sydney Marathon. Jepchirchir subsequently won in Sydney with a mark of 2:18:31 on August 30. She is one of the most decorated marathon runners in recent history, with major wins in New York City (2021), Boston (2022) and London (2024).
