In 1952, an English teacher named Cecil Dormand secretly paid for a dirt-poor 11-year-old to take a drama course.
He never told him and the boy didn’t find out until decades later.
By then, he was a knight, that little boy’s name was Patrick Stewart.
He was born into a poor family in Mirfield, a small mill town in Yorkshire and his father came home from World War II a violent man, and he was violent toward Patrick’s mother.
Young Patrick learned exactly when to step between his father’s fist and his mother.
An English teacher put a copy of Shakespeare in his hand and told him to get up and perform.
He never stopped and left school at 15.
By 19 he was completely bald... most agencies told him he'd never make it because of that.
In 1987, the LA Times called him an “unknown British Shakespearean actor” when he was cast as Captain Picard.
Then he became one of the most famous faces on Earth.
You’ve probably heard that part.
Here’s the part you haven’t:
He spent decades as a patron of Refuge, sheltering women and children from domestic violence.
But he never stopped trying to understand his father.
He dug up a 1940 newspaper clipping that said his dad had come home with severe shell shock.
He went to France and walked the ground where his father’s unit was pinned down under bombing for hours.
He learned his father had PTSD, and nobody ever helped him.
So Patrick became an ambassador for Combat Stress, a charity that helps veterans.
In 2013, a young woman at a Texas convention told him she was a survivor of domestic violence.
He asked, “My dear, are you okay?”
Then he hopped off the stage, held her, and told her: “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.”
At Dragon Con, a Make-A-Wish girl dressed as Spock came to meet him.
2,000 people were waiting for him to speak... he sat down and talked with her for 15 minutes, making all of them wait.
He told her that since they were friends now, whenever she saw him on screen she could wave and say, “Hello Patrick.”
After 9/11, he felt helpless, so he brought his one-man A Christmas Carol back to Broadway for a full week of charity shows.
He played every character himself and donated every cent.
In 2019 he did it again, and every dollar went to feeding hungry New Yorkers.
In 2017, he fostered a pit bull named Ginger, who had been rescued from a dogfighting ring.
She was his first dog in more than 50 years.
He couldn’t bring her home to England, so he found her a family.
Then he kept fostering more.
When he said he was done with Star Trek so many people told him the show had gotten them through the hardest times of their lives.
So he wanted to see if Picard could do it one more time.
Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick 🖖

We have crossed $45,000 this morning.
If you're a little unsure about Kickstarter, here's how it works. We are not raising money for a charitable cause, we are collected PRE-ORDERS FOR BOOKS. Specifically, an epic American fantasy trilogy.
(By the way, the "Kickstarter" or "pre-order" price of the books is cheaper than the retail price will be later, especially if you buy all three.)
The books are written. We will ship them with their sprayed edges and their endpapers and probably their interior art, too (I am confident) probably in March.
At the link below you can learn more about the series and the campaign and you can back the project (which means, you can pre-order the books, and buy T-shirts and caps if you like):

Just admitted as an Associate Member of the Western Writers of America. Grateful and excited to join this group of Western storytellers.
After twenty-five years of marriage she’s still my first choice. And in that time, I’m pretty sure I’ve moved up in to her top 10.

The conflict between Belbury and St. Anne's is an ever-increasingly real one.
Choose the right side. Choose the real.

According to Clint Eastwood, during the filming of "The Shootist" (1976), Don Siegel got into trouble with John Wayne. He asked Wayne to shoot the villain in the back in one of the scenes in the movie. After a long pause, Wayne asked, "You mean I shoot him in the back?". Siegel replied, "Yeah, just shoot him, because he has got four other guys with him". Wayne replied back, "I don't shoot anyone in the back". Siegel then told Wayne that Eastwood would have shot him in the back. Wayne's face turned blue and he said, "I don't care what that kid would have done, I don't shoot him in the back". Eastwood felt that it was a terrible error on the part of Siegel in saying that.
P.S: On this day, 50 years ago, "The Shootist" (1976) premiered in Carson City, Nevada, USA.
As a kid I thought it would be Star Wars, E.T., Goonies.
Turns out it was Excalibur, Big Trouble in Little China, and They Live.
Good morning. Happy July Sixth. When the fireworks run out, will return to writing.

Adam trying to name the ostrich.
Ostrich: "But I'm not a bird of the air."
Adam: "I don't care."
163 years ago today at Gettysburg, my great-great-grandfather Ransom Harlow of the 5th NC (CSA) was wounded and captured, while my maternal great-great-grandfather Jesse Estes, 4th Kentucky (Union) chased Bragg through the Tennessee mud.
Remembering both Americans today.

Russell Fisk, the owner/operator of the interplanetary tramp freighter Inquisitive Tamandua, really hates transporting live cargo. But when money’s tight and jobs are hard to find, he’ll take what he can get.
Sometimes the client's paperwork is iffy. Sometimes the live cargo is unpredictable. And sometimes the dead cargo is even more unpredictable.
Whether the meerkats are engaged in a blood feud, the graveyard is haunted, or the miniature multicolored glow-in-the-dark capybaras might spontaneously combust, Russ has one simple (ha) mission: Getting his cargo and crew from Point A to Point B in one piece, while staying a step ahead of the feds.
I'm hungry, and no one is awake in the house. I'm 15 minutes from a Waffle House. No one would even know. #5amwritersclub
