The writers wanted to submit the widely acclaimed "Mother Simpson" for the Emmy but the showrunners chose this episode instead thinking the 3D animation would give them the edge.

Fun fact: originally the line was "the first non-fictional person to travel back through time," but the higher-ups at FOX found that line too confusing since "non-fiction" is a genre, so it was changed to "non-Brazilian"; to this day, not even Matt Groening himself knows what that means.
