I've said this before: the majority of people who use AI (and I'm not talking about programmers or people who actually have to constantly run agentic tasks at desk or other truly token-hungry stuff like that, but just the typical person using ChatGPT as a replacement for Google) could simply download an open-source model, run it locally on their home PC, and get a perfectly acceptable result. Altman is mortally afraid of the average AI user figuring that out.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says it’s “quite terrible” that people have so much DRAM sitting in their own PCs instead of being used in data centers. “Everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer. And be used 5% of the time,” He argues that cloud data centers should make better use of limited memory supplies instead of people running AI models locally.

Anthropic is cracking down on AI-generated video game clones through Claude Code. A new instruction added tells Claude to build original games or use ideas from existing genres, but not recreate specific games, even if they’re renamed. The move could affect people using AI to recreate games like Terraria, Minecraft, Halo or GTA as browser games or unofficial ports.

Another reason for open source. Unfortunately, Anthropic no longer allows good benchmarks like Minecraft or GTA 5 recreational games. To be fair: probably as a consequence of the IPO, to avoid legal issues due to copyright infringement.
ANTHROPIC IS CRACKING DOWN ON VIDEO GAME REWRITES 🚨 Claude Code picked up a new rule around Oct 27, sent from Anthropic’s servers under a flag called "tengu_heron_brook". There’s no setting to turn it off. The full rule: “Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user’s own designs and assets. Don’t build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original.” Is this the end of game rewrites, modding and everything in between?

Dude who caused the DRAM shortage is now scolding people for hoarding memory inside their own laptops instead of giving it all to him.
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources “a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”
