I always liked this scene in The Next Generation where Picard explains to a Wall Street financier that society has eliminated scarcity, poverty, hunger, and money. The financier is troubled by that, and Picard responds that the point is to enrich your life.

Ursula K. Le Guin in 2014: “Hard times are coming, when we will be wanting voices who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being…We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable—but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings.” During the feudal era, the greed and power of kings ruled society until the people fought back. Now, in the capitalist era, the greed and power of billionaires rule society. Like the kings, they think their reign will last forever, but it will only last until the people rise up and change it. Different eras, similar struggle. The struggle of the people to liberate ourselves from the greed of the ruling class and the power and wealth imbalances of top-down hierarchical societies. As powerful and inescapable as capitalism feels, it has no power without the people and the workers who make it run! Once the people figure this out en masse the world is ours to collectively share together!

Not much is left to fully fund my chance to be evacuated from Gaza to France to continue my education and build my future. Please help us reach the goal as soon as possible. chuffed.org/project/muayadst…
Good news: I received an updated acceptance letter from Université Marie & Louis Pasteur. The university has extended my start date to December, giving us the time needed to process my visa and arrange my evacuation. I’m so close to this chance to continue my education and rebuild my life. Please help me reach my goal by sharing and supporting: chuffed.org/project/muayadst…

“Being left-wing can create a little problems sometimes in the United States, but I would have fun with it! There’s nothing like being at a dinner party in Beverly Hills with fancy guests and telling them you’re a socialist.” Rest in Peace, Patrick Stewart ✊

My initial thought about Flávio Bolsonaro fleeing to US was not his exposure but mostly because Trump needs to keep him quiet about what Trump, Bannon and perhaps Musk did to try to elect him.

Two pictures emerge from this vote. On one hand, the majority of humanity once again takes a stand against the genocidal US embargo. On the other, the number of countries opposing it has fallen precipitously. In 2022, I watched this same vote play out live from Caracas. Then, only two countries voted against: the US and Israel. Two abstained: Ukraine and Brazil. This year, the US appears to have strong-armed another 40 countries to either vote against or abstain. This is one barometer of the dramatic corrosion of political sovereignty that we are witnessing as empire enters its long decline.
BREAKING 🇨🇺🇺🇳 The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly condemned the genocidal US blockade of Cuba for the 34th time.

📷✍️NEW REPORTING SERIES📷✍️: “How to Build a General Strike: Dispatches from Ports Mobilizing for the October 30 International Day of Action” So stoked to launch this new series, in collaboration with @ProgIntl's "The Wire," to report on the fast-approaching dockworkers’ strike on October 30 that now spans more than 100 ports in 17 countries across four continents. I’ve been in Italy with the dockworkers, organizers, and flotilla activists getting ready to disrupt global supply chains on October 30 by refusing to load the weapons and cargo that make Israel’s genocide and U.S.-Israel wars possible. The journalistic approach here is “workers’ inquiry," where workers report on their local conditions, general strategies, and political difficulties, in their own words, for workers everywhere. First profile is on Livorno, where, as luck would have it, the @gbsumudflotilla’s Italian delegation was launching a solidarity action when I got in town. I sat down with Giovanni Ceraolo, national ports coordinator for Unione Sindacale di Base (@usbsindacato); Simone D’Aversa, a founder of Gruppo Autonomo Portuali (GAP); and Luca Poggi of GSF Italia. Video report here, written dispatch below👇 Please share widely 🙏

NEW: On Friday, dockworkers at 111 ports in 22 countries and regions on five continents will stop work in a coordinated strike against war, according to the most recent information from the organizing unions. More than 25 dockworkers’ unions have now signed on, from Marseille to Mumbai, Hamburg to Montevideo, Melbourne to Oakland. Days ago the count stood at about 100 ports in 17 countries, and that figure doesn’t include the dozens of unions in other sectors that have pledged support. Their demand is simple: no weapons and no military cargo through their ports. Nearly everything the world ships passes through the docks, and without the workers who load and unload it, nothing moves. In France, the main dockers’ union says the country’s ports will be 95% shut. Italy, India, Greece and Turkey face 24-hour strikes, and Morocco and Cyprus will see stoppages of up to two hours, with rallies planned in port cities around the world. In Greece, metalworkers, ship-repair workers and young people are joining the dockers, and in the US, ILWU Local 10 is striking in Oakland and San Francisco. The unions are working from the Istanbul Declaration, signed in May, with each one deciding for itself how to take part. They are also fighting for their own jobs, against cuts from automation and for contracts, raises, shorter hours and safety. The unions point to escalating wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the danger of a generalized war. They condemn Israel’s new crimes in Hebron, carried out with the backing of the US, NATO and the EU. Israel’s lockdown of the city is now in its sixth day, with more than 3,000 Palestinians displaced, according to the UN. Palestinian unions have endorsed Friday’s action. In Italy, the fight has spilled beyond the docks. The union USB has called for a nationwide general strike. Last night, the Italian government ordered transport workers back on the job last night. USB said it would defy the order and accept the steep penalties. The unions are calling on workers and young people everywhere to stand with the dockworkers, saying “Ports for peace and the peoples, not launching pads for war.” I’m reporting from Calabria, Italy, and I will be in Genoa tomorrow ahead of the strike to report on the ground during the mobilzation.

BREAKING: Sen. Chris Murphy was briefed on highly classified military planning on Iran to restart the war after the midterms, calling the plans "insane." "I will just say this: their plan is insane. It will lead to devastating escalation and the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law," he said at the Middle East Institute event. The plan "will be devastating for our security interests," he adds.
