Grew up reading the H-L every single day primarily for local sports and the City/State section. May as well shut the whole thing down at this point, but what’s the point if it’s not local?
So, it looks like the @heraldleader decided Sept 20, 2026 was as good a day as any to cease being an outlet that actually covers Lexington, KY. High school sports, city Hall, the KY General Assembly, KY health issues? They fired everyone who covers those beats today. (1/4)
The biggest crowd in D2 volleyball last night was in Bethany for SNU-SWOSU, and the third-largest was in Alva for ECU-NWOSU. Love how much the game has grown across our footprint!

D-I athletics right now:
• UCLA: $219M cumulative deficit
• Rutgers: $516.9M in cumulative shortfalls since joining the Big10
• Iowa State: $147M projected budget gap
• NC State: $18.5M projected deficit
• Dozens of varsity programs eliminated in the last year
• New fees passed to fans
More money than ever, still not enough.
Fewer opportunities. Greater instability.
This isn’t what college sports should be.

Every new legal ruling or national update makes me think about our Division II compliance personnel. At many schools, it’s one person navigating constant change while supporting an entire department & hundreds of student-athletes. The job is far more complex than most realize.
Very cool that @ESPN_BillC has the '93 @ECUTigersFB vs. @GSUpioneers NAIA title clash on his 100 games that explain college football list. Great guys on both squads, and what a game!

"Austin never lost a game in high school starting at quarterback. He's a winner, certified."
Hog fans, do you remember Austin Ledbetter? He pitched for Arkansas in 2022 and 2023, and then joined Razorback football in 2024 as a QB. Before all that, he played quarterback at Bryant, where he was UNDEFEATED, 26-0 with the Hornets.
Well, now he's the starting quarterback at Henderson State, and they have high hopes for him entering this season. ⤵️⤵️

Harding was the unanimous favorite to win the GAC again, taking 1st in the Preseason Coaches Poll.
@OuachitaFB received the only other 1st place vote (from Harding) and enters the season picked 2nd.
Coach Knight says those polls "mean absolutely nothing." #D2FB

This year, @ATUFootball is hoping to prove they aren't "One Year Wonder Boys."
Arkansas Tech finished 7-4 in year one under @RoyThompsonFB, their first winning season since 2017. Now, they are hungry for more. #D2FB

"We've been knocking on the door. It's time to kick it in."
@SAUFootball has finished Top 3 of the GAC the last 3 seasons but has yet to earn a spot in the #D2FB postseason.
@CoachBradSmiley believes they have the talent and work ethic, but need to "get it done" in big games.

Down in Monticello, @CoachGGoff enters year one of a rebuild at @UAMsports.
But he says the foundation is already there for a strong program.
His players say he's "won over the locker room" and is "building a team bond [they've] never had before." #d2fb

After sitting behind Cole Keylon for 3 seasons, @Harding_FB QB Malik Young will finally get his chance to lead the Bisons in 2026.
New HC Roddy Mote praised his patience and work ethic heading into his senior season.
"You will not find a more loyal young man than Malik Young."

This year, #D2FB is moving away from committees and relying solely on NPI.
I asked GAC Commissioner Will Prewitt how silo scheduling might impact teams' ability to make the postseason.
He said they have no plans to change right now, but will "read and react" moving forward.

For the first time since 2022, @ReddiesFB will be led by a new starting QB.
Former #Arkansas pitcher and Bryant standout Austin Ledbetter will get the nod for the Reddies after transferring to HSU last year.
Ledbetter never lost a game as a starter at Bryant.
