It is with deep sadness we share news of the passing of Etienne d’Aboville, a pioneering figure in Scotland’s Independent Living Movement and GCIL’s first CEO. Under his leadership, GCIL grew from a small grassroots initiative into Scotland’s largest Centre for Inclusive Living.
His influence reached far beyond GCIL — from helping to establish organisations such as Glasgow Disability Alliance, to championing the reopening of the Independent Living Fund in Scotland. Etienne’s voice was one of clarity, conviction, and compassion.
He will be remembered as a leader, mentor, and friend. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Susie, their family, and all who knew him.
