Disclosure: When I use the term “YIMBY,” I’m using it as a term of art (“Yes In My Backyard”), not as shorthand for California YIMBY. I’m a big fan of CA YIMBY and the hard work their team does advancing pro-housing policy across California. They have been one of the most effective housing organizations in the state. When I say “YIMBY,” I’m generally referring to the broader coalition of people who believe more housing should be built: advocates, organizers, academics, elected officials, developers, renters, homeowners, and everyday supporters. Some are deeply versed in housing policy, others are simply people who recognize that we need more homes. Also, for the record, I am not the YIMBY. As this photo clearly demonstrates, the bee already has that job. 🐝🏠🤣 (Photo credit: me.)

YIMBYs are all in on Nithya for mayor. The developer community is decidedly more mixed. We break it down in our latest episode.
Can Nithya win over developers? Housing advocate and developer Andrew Slocum joins the latest episode of "In Search of a City: The LA Housing Podcast" to discuss with hosts @JesseZwick @Leslie_Ridings @_jonnyshotit_ and Io Sunwoo! Watch: youtube.com/watch?v=10WzThia…

This is the type of fascism I support!
“It is going to be a zero tolerance zone. Anybody caught selling drugs at MacArthur Park or Skid Row or downtown L.A., you are going to get charged federally and you’re going to spend a decade or more in federal prison.” The LAPD chief echoed that message. latimes.com/california/story…

This is absolutely not something the city needs.

We’ve already reduced rent increases and strengthened tenant protections. This issue is that they are not being enforced. As mayor, I will create a new Office of Tenant Protections to stop violations of existing renter’s rights.

West End Development Partners closed 2 more deals last week. 1. Acquired a 9 unit building in partnership with Green Development Company, we’ll be doubling the density through ADUs. Closed last Friday, submitted plans on Tuesday. 2. Acquired a SFR, we’ll be converting the house to a duplex and building 2 additional townhomes. We also moved into a new Culver City office two weeks ago, morale is high!

Missing middle is the housing between single family homes and high-rises that we don't have enough of. Think Brownstones in Brooklyn, Rowhouses in Philly, six-flats in Chicago, or bungalow courts in Los Angeles. These housing types became illegal or infeasible due to overregulation. Requirements for multiple stairways, sprinklers, underground parking, ramps, elevators, steel/concrete, etc. It's a shame as these types of properties lead to walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, shorter commutes, cool retail, and tight knit communities. @cayimby, @BuffyWicks, @GDCAndrew, @DRand2024, and many others have fearlessly taken on this problem by helping to pass countless laws that allow "Missing Middle" housing in California. Thanks to these laws, we've been able to raise capital and put together a 250+ unit pipeline of new apartments at a reasonable price point that add to the character of the community. I've added a couple pictures of one of our early deliveries. You can see this unit has great natural light. It's not a $1mm+ single family home, it's not another apartment within a 200 unit building, it's the "missing middle." The first picture is from the IMN Multifamily Conference where I did a panel with Noah Ornstein, Vanessa Delgado, Melissa Bartolucci Delgado, and Nathan Resnick.

California is heaven on earth. Fertile land, temperate climate, mountains, coast, beaches and a multi-decade head start on tech. Negative net domestic migration is a governance failure.

Until you’ve lived somewhere with a dying economy, it’s hard to appreciate how misguided the de-growth movement is. Population decline and a shrinking economy means each generation is worse off than the last. The best and brightest leave. The best of who’s left are knee-capped by crime and corruption, society infected by apathy. The state steps in to fill the void, creating dependency, cronyism and the social contract erodes as struggling people see the powerful blatantly steal while their kids’ prospects dwindle. The environmental angle doesn’t hold up either - where I live the few industries that are left are poisoning the farmland and fishing waters because the luxury of low impact practices doesn’t exit when there’s no one to buy what you’re selling. De-growth is an appealing counter to the ugly excesses of capitalism. But the alternative it offers is far, far worse.

Green Development Company is honored to continue our partnership with @atnissly and the team. We’re adding 18 ADUs to this 44 unit building. Architectural plans have been in progress well before closing. Ready to hand of to @TKlatte ASAP
Our 44th deal is a 44 unit in Burbank. Fear of impending rent control has caused an otherwise great market to trade off. At the asset level, a seismic requirement forced the sale, and we're able to cure it by adding attached ADUs. Thanks for another smooth transaction @DMAC_19! @TKlatte - looking forward to building!

Even the hospital in the UK doesn’t have air conditioning. Don’t ask me how I know.
🚨 NEW: The Met Office estimates around 2,700 people died due to the UK heatwaves in May and June

Your occasional reminder that the City of L.A. has only spent or even encumbered just 12% of its Measure ULA revenues. They have torpedoed the apartment, office and industrial markets in L.A. and can't even use the money they've taken in.

Every YIMBY I know cares deeply about building more housing. What often gets missed is that housing isn’t just zoning. It’s land acquisition, debt, equity, permitting, construction, operations, rent collection, maintenance, and long-term management. Likewise, many developers underestimate what it takes to actually change policy: coalition building, stakeholder negotiations, public outreach, committee hearings, and the years-long effort required to pass legislation that survives the political process. Tension comes from the fact that many self-described socialist housing advocates and politicians have spent years organizing around housing circles while advancing a fundamentally different theory of how housing works. They often believe government intervention, public ownership, and stronger controls can solve the problem, while many of us who finance, entitle, build, and operate housing see supply, investment, and predictable rules as essential. Neither side has an easy job. I spend my days trying to get housing approved, financed, built, and operated while also fighting bad policies and supporting good legislation. Trust me: it’s complicated. The people building housing don’t understand politics as well as they think, and the people making housing policy often don’t understand what it takes to actually produce housing.
Replying to @Jesse_Leg
most YIMBYs don’t actually care about housing. the movement is largely now just filled with socialists who correctly understand that housing is the most important issue of our generation.

Cities should pull permit timeline data by reviewer and department. If one plan checker or zoning reviewer consistently takes 2–3 times longer than everyone else, that should become a management issue. Housing policy means little if projects are getting stuck at the same desk for months. The goal shouldn’t be to find reasons to delay a permit it should be to find a path to approval. Plan checkers should be calling applicants and saying, “Let’s figure out how to get this done.”
Replying to @LA_Multi_Fam
I think city staff would learn a lot if they knew what it was like sitting on a big bridge debt payment you can’t move off until you get your permits! Only to graduate to the monthly construction loan payment you can’t move off of until you finish the project and get C of O. Housing takes risk. Having bureaucrats stall you for a month because they are on vacation while you eat costs is insane.

I have a lot of respect for everyone that worked hard on this. The reality is its either a Legislative or @HJTA issue to fix. Local Government for many reasons isn’t capable of the task at hand.
LA Council Committee reviewing the city's mansion tax/Measure ULA decides NOT to recommend a November ballot measure to make changes. Chair @YsabelJuradoLA says it's too early to evaluate the tax's long-term effects.
