In Grand Rapids, Michigan, a heartwarming scene unfolded at the courthouse during a boy's adoption hearing. Five-year-old Michael, accompanied by his foster parents, was surrounded by an unexpected group of supporters – his entire kindergarten class.
Each child held up large red hearts on sticks, symbolizing their love and solidarity for Michael. When the judge invited attendees to express their feelings about Michael, the kindergartners provided heartwarming responses. They stood up one by one, declaring their affection and stating that Michael was their best friend.
Michael's adoptive father shared that this event was particularly special, as the judge mentioned it was the first time she had ever seen an entire kindergarten class attend a hearing in her courtroom.

Jonas Salk creates the first polio vaccine, 1955.
Salk decided not to patent his polio vaccine so that it would be affordable for millions of people who couldn't afford it. In an interview, Edward R. Murrow asked Salk who owned the patent to the polio vaccine.
"Well, the people, I would say," Salk responded. "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"
As a result of his actions, he lost out on an estimated 7 billion dollars but helped save millions of lives.

The whole history of science has been the gradual realization that events do not happen in an arbitrary manner, but that they reflect a certain underlying order, which may or may not be divinely inspired.

In early sobriety, I could not fathom life without alcohol. Parties, weddings, dating, hanging out with the guys—every social scenario seemed soaked in beer and whiskey.
I worried about feeling isolated without a drink in hand, relegated to be the loner at parties, the quiet corners of libraries or the subdued corners of a all night coffee shop, distant from the social life I thought I needed.
This fear was based on societal constructs—a narrative tirelessly sold by media and ingrained in our culture. The old-timer Donald, whom I've mentioned before, would say it's "the way Madison Ave wants you to think about alcohol."
But that's just a myth.
Sobriety marked not an end but a new beginning for me. Admitting powerlessness and entrusting my will and life to a higher power was like stepping onto the path of a marathon with no finish line in sight. It was about commitment, not instant gratification—about patience, persistence, and gradual growth.
Every day in recovery, I choose my direction. It's about forging and nurturing healthy habits, seeking support, and rediscovering joy in a life unclouded by alcohol or drugs. It's facing emotions head-on, celebrating triumphs, and enduring hardships with clarity and resilience.
This transformation has been anything but overnight. It demanded consistent effort and a conscious decision not to become ungrateful because, for someone with my history, such a slip doesn't just mean a bad day—it can whisper dangerous temptations like. "Gee, cocaine sounds like a wonderful idea, maybe I could try a few bumps"
Indeed, as Joseph Campbell might frame it, we each embark on our own personal 'Hero's Journey' of sobriety.
We answer the call to adventure by recognizing our addictions, face trials as we trudge with dependency, find guidance in sponsors or a higher power, and ultimately, we hope to return, time and again, transformed by sobriety and continually evolving in our new way of life.
In the Twelve Steps, this universal narrative becomes deeply personal. We become the protagonists of our stories, confronting and overcoming our unique challenges, guided by a higher power as we understand it.
As you continue on your own path, may the strength of sobriety accompany every step of your hero's journey.
