Excl: @bphillipsonMP told @thetimes that challenging misogyny must be placed "at the forefront of our public consciousness" after five schoolgirls made a video about the rape threats and sexism they face daily.

Education should be a passport - to work, to life, to further study. But too many young people are still being shut out.
Everyone deserves an education that matches their high ambitions, not a one‑size‑fits‑all straitjacket.

Excl: @Keir_Starmer writes in The Times on how his late brother’s struggle “just to be seen, to count” inspired special educational needs overhaul.
The PM says his brother Nick, who died the Christmas before last, “belonged in mainstream society, as do the wonderful adults that today’s children with Send will grow up to be”.
“And so I believe, where possible and right, these children also belong in mainstream schooling.”
Comes ahead of launch of the schools white paper tomorrow 👇🏻

Exc: Children will have their legal right to special needs support reviewed under stricter criteria when they move to secondary school.
Major SEND reforms to be unveiled as soon as Monday will say the current system is too “rigid” and overly reliant on statutory assessments.
Two new tiers of support will be created beneath EHCPs - targeted and targeted plus - that will be led by mainstream schools, with the promise of extra training and resources.
Importantly, a child with an EHCP will have this reviewed when they transition - eg from primary to secondary school.
Given Labour backbenchers’ concerns about the handling of this issue, insiders say there is a risk of a backlash from MPs.
But allies of Bridget Phillipson say that MPs understand the “direction of travel” and her proposed changes are the result of the most extensive consultation on the issue to date.
They stress that children will still have their legal right to special needs support strengthened through the new system, even without an EHCP.
A bill is expected in the next Commons session, with changes to EHCPs not likely to take effect until the end of this parliament.

Miles Hewstone, who quit in 2019 but retained his emeritus titles for years, is accused of making unwanted advances towards students and researchers thetimes.com/uk/education/ar…
Georgia Lambert (she/her) retweeted
This new article provides evidence that Miles Hewstone was engaging in sexual harassment and assault at Oxford and other universities for over 30 years. More women have bravely come forward to describe his behavior and this is just the tip of the iceberg since I know several other women Miles mistreated
How does someone get away with this for 30 years?
This article reveals the institutional failures that allowed him to maintain positions of power and prestige: People in power knew and did nothing. Oxford let him retire and maintain his prestigious appointments. EASP did not take action against Miles (after Oxford refused to cooperate). This is why dozens of women were harassed and many were forced out of the field.
I think our leaders, universities, and societies need to take greater action. Even if people like Miles switch universities, they are still able to retaliate against victims as a reviewer, editor, letter writer, etc, because they maintain power through our professional organizations.
Being a member of a professional society is a privilege, not a right. If a member is engaging in sexual harassment or assault, they have no business attending these meetings or holding positions of power. If you are a member of an academic society and want to see change, please ask them to take action. If someone is found guilty by a university investigation or they have credible eyewitness reports of harassment, then there need to be actual consequences.

But this Times investigation shows SEND money is being diverted by councils to other priorities. A huge scandal, that will keep unfolding...

Sheffield Hallam University - accused of dropping research into slave labour after pressure from China - failed to alert ministers about possible foreign interference, despite repeated warnings to do so.
Prof Laura Murphy, who led the research, urged the university to report her concerns to the government, but internal emails from Aug 2024 suggest she was ignored.
The Times understands it was Whitehall that eventually initiated contact in Oct 2024 - after being alerted by a third party.
The university insists it “reported relevant matters” to the government, but could not say when contact was made, who made it, or what was discussed.
Comes as more academics told The Times that Chinese interference in UK universities is becoming increasingly “insidious”.

EXCL w/@GLJourno: Counterterrorism police officers are examining claims that a British university broke national security laws by halting an academic’s research into forced labour in China after facing pressure from Beijing.
Sheffield Hallam University suspended a project examining forced labour in Chinese supply chains after the state authorities had “intimidated, harassed and interrogated” university staff working in the country.
Now the university could face prosecution under the National Security Act if it is found to have co-operated with a foreign intelligence service.
