SOUTH ASHEVILLE FOODIES... HOW IN THE WORLD DID WE MISS THIS PLACE?!?
Y'all, I'm just gonna come right out and say it... Black Bear Pizza ON SWEETEN CREEK ROAD IS SO DANG YUM!!!
You know that little pizzeria attached to the gas station? Yep, THAT ONE! And let me tell you, don't let the location fool ya, because they're putting out some seriously delicious eats!
The PIZZA? ABSOLUTELY DELISH! 🍕
The CALZONE? AMAZING!
And that CHICKEN PARM SUB? RIGHT ON THE MONEY!
Now, Asheville has pizza joints scattered from one end of town to the other, and somehow we'd never made it into this little South Asheville gem.
AND THAT, MY FRIENDS, WAS OUR LOSS!
But hey, better late than never, right? Because NOW WE KNOW!
And just when we thought we'd discovered another great pizza spot... HOLD UP! THERE'S MORE!
Watch the END of our reel, because Black Bear Pizza has a pretty incredible BREAKFAST SELECTION TOO!
Now, I didn't happen to see any breakfast pizza on the menu, but something tells me we might be able to sweet-talk somebody back in that kitchen into working something out! Haha!
Breakfast pizza, anybody? I'm just putting that idea out into the universe! 😂
One thing we love about the Asheville food scene is that some of the best surprises are hiding in plain sight. Sometimes you just gotta pull into that little place you've driven past a hundred times and give it a shot!
SUPPORT LOCAL. EXPLORE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. AND NEVER JUDGE A PIZZERIA BY THE GAS PUMPS NEXT DOOR!
SOUTH ASHEVILLE, YOU'VE GOT ANOTHER WINNER!
👇 WHO'S BEEN TO BLACK BEAR PIZZA? What's your favorite thing to order, and has anybody tried their breakfast?

Competition Happens at the Bottom. At the Top, We Collaborate.
Unfortunately, Asheville spent too many years under the influence of self-appointed community leaders who tried to destroy anything and anyone they couldn't control.
They created a dog-eat-dog environment built on jealousy, gatekeeping, manipulation, and personal agendas. All while preaching community.
Fake community. Fake leadership. Real damage.
They weaponized influence, attacked people who challenged their circles, and treated other peoples success as a threat.
That's not leadership. That's insecurity with an audience.
Real leaders build. They collaborate. They open doors. They celebrate other peoples wins.
I've never believed that supporting another business, entrepreneur, or creator takes anything away from me. Quite the opposite.
My hope is that Asheville's old culture of manufactured division finally dies out, along with the influence of those who perpetuated it.
It's time for a new generation of leadership built on integrity, opportunity, mutual respect, and genuine community.
We don't need permission to succeed. We don't need approval to lead. And we certainly don't need gatekeepers deciding who belongs.
Let's bring back the love, the collaboration, and the community that Asheville deserves.
Build people up. Stop tearing them down. That's leadership.

GOODBYE TO AN ERA AT ANGELO'S FAMILY RESTAURANT — BUT THEY AIN'T CLOSED YET!
For so many years, Angelo's Family Restaurant has been part of the heart of Fairview and Asheville. A place where families gathered, friends shared meals, and generations of locals enjoyed good food and familiar faces.
It wasn't about fancy menus or the latest food trends. It was about community, tradition, and having a place that felt a little like home.
And those places are becoming harder to find.
Across Asheville and Western North Carolina, our food scene has changed tremendously. New restaurants, exciting flavors, talented chefs, and fresh ideas are transforming where and how we eat.
Some longtime favorites have disappeared, while others are making way for something new.
And now, Angelo's is preparing for its next chapter!
A new group in town has purchased the restaurant, with plans for a major remodel and promises of some pretty great eats!
BUT HOLD ON, FOLKS... ANGELO'S IS STILL OPEN!
They're continuing to serve customers until they close for the big remodel coming soon. So there's still time to stop in, enjoy another meal, and support this longtime neighborhood favorite.
As for what's coming next? WE'RE EXCITED, WE'RE CURIOUS, BUT WE'LL BELIEVE THE HYPE WHEN WE TASTE THE FOOD!
Here's hoping the next chapter brings something wonderful to the Fairview community!
THANK YOU, ANGELO'S, FOR THE YEARS OF FOOD, FRIENDSHIPS, AND MEMORIES!

“Crazy Nancy”: The Mysterious Mountain Moonshiner Who Outsmarted the Law and Vanished Into History backwoodsamerica.com/crazy-n… #CrazyNancy #Moonshiner #WomenInHistory #BackwoodsAmerica
Y'ALL EVER HEARD OF CRAZY NANCY?! THE WOMAN WHO HAD THE REVENUERS CHASING THEIR OWN TAILS!
HAHAHAHA! Now THIS is a moonshiner story worth telling!
Back in the 1880s, deep in the hills of Warren County, New Jersey, lived a mysterious woman folks called “CRAZY NANCY.”
Nobody seemed to know her real name, where she came from, or how she managed to keep money in her pocket.
She sold berries in the summertime, trapped animals for their furs, and disappeared for weeks every winter.
BUT NANCY HAD A LITTLE SECRET!
According to an 1896 newspaper account, she was running a hidden APPLEJACK operation inside a hillside!
And we're not talking about a few little jars, either!
When authorities eventually searched her property, the newspaper reported finding approximately 500 GALLONS OF APPLEJACK!
GOOD GRACIOUS! Nancy wasn't playing around!
But here's where the story gets REALLY GOOD!
A government detective named Finch spent TWO MONTHS watching her place, even posing as a farmhand.
Eventually, he discovered her hidden still and learned that Nancy had apparently been disguising herself in men's clothing!
SHE WASN'T CRAZY... SHE WAS CRAZY CLEVER! 😂
Then came the showdown.
Finch hid beneath her kitchen table, waited until she returned, pulled his revolver, and ordered her to raise her hands.
BIG MISTAKE, MISTER!
According to the old account, Nancy blew out the candle, struck him with a stool, and DISAPPEARED!
AND THEY NEVER FOUND HER!
HAHAHAHA! Talk about a woman who knew how to make an EXIT!
Now, some details of this old newspaper tale remain impossible to independently confirm.
But one thing's certain: women have been part of America's moonshining history for generations, and their stories deserve to be remembered!
HISTORY AIN'T JUST ABOUT THE MEN BEHIND THE STILL!
It's about resourcefulness, determination, survival, and the remarkable characters who helped shape our country.
And Nancy?
SHE LEFT THE REVENUERS WITH 500 GALLONS OF APPLEJACK AND ONE HECK OF A STORY!

CONWAY TWITTY BUILT A WHOLE CITY TO KEEP HIS FAMILY TOGETHER... BUT NEVER MADE IT HOME FROM HIS FINAL SHOW.
Y'ALL, THIS ONE REALLY MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT LIFE.
On the night of June 4, 1993, country music legend Conway Twitty was heading home to Hendersonville, Tennessee, after performing in Branson, Missouri.
Another concert finished. Another crowd entertained. Another night on the road.
At 59 years old, Conway had spent decades doing what he loved.
But waiting back home was something he'd built that meant far more than another gold record.
TWITTY CITY.
Now, if y'all remember Conway Twitty, you probably remember that unmistakable voice singing Hello Darlin', I'd Love to Lay You Down, or one of those unforgettable duets with Loretta Lynn.
But here's something you might NOT know.
Back in 1982, Conway opened a beautiful nine-acre complex in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
It had entertainment facilities, a museum, shops, and places where fans could experience the world of Conway Twitty.
But right there on the property sat something even more meaningful.
HIS HOME... AND HOMES FOR ALL FOUR OF HIS CHILDREN.
Think about that.
This man had traveled countless miles, entertained millions, and become one of the biggest names in country music.
And what did he want when he came home?
HIS FAMILY CLOSE ENOUGH TO WALK OVER AND SAY HELLO.
He didn't just build a tourist attraction.
He built a place where his children could live nearby, where family could gather, and where his fans could feel welcome.
That's a mighty beautiful dream.
And here's another thing...
CONWAY TWITTY WASN'T EVEN HIS REAL NAME!
He was born Harold Lloyd Jenkins in Mississippi. He later took the names of two little towns—Conway, Arkansas, and Twitty, Texas—and turned them into one of the most recognizable names in music history.
And before he was a country superstar?
HE WAS A ROCK-AND-ROLL HEARTTHROB!
His 1958 hit It's Only Make Believe topped the pop charts.
He was also talented enough at baseball to attract interest from the Philadelphia Phillies!
AND GET THIS...
In 1975, Conway recorded Hello Darlin' IN RUSSIAN!
The song was actually played in SPACE during the historic Apollo-Soyuz mission.
FROM A LITTLE MISSISSIPPI TOWN TO OUTER SPACE! NOW THAT'S A COUNTRY BOY MAKING HISTORY!
But for all those remarkable accomplishments, the sweetest part of his story may have been what he wanted for his family.
And sadly, life had other plans.
On that final trip home from Branson, Conway collapsed aboard his tour bus during a stop in Missouri.
He was rushed to a hospital in Springfield, where doctors performed emergency surgery following a ruptured abdominal aneurysm.
On June 5, 1993, Conway Twitty passed away.
He was only 59.
His wife and loved ones were with him at the hospital.
AND THE MAN WHO HAD BUILT A PLACE TO KEEP HIS FAMILY CLOSE NEVER RETURNED HOME.
Now, I don't tell y'all this story just to make anybody sad.
I tell it because there's something here worth remembering.
WE SPEND SO MUCH OF OUR LIVES BUILDING THE LIFE WE THINK WE'LL GET TO ENJOY SOMEDAY.
We work overtime.
We chase the money.
We build the business.
We buy the property.
We tell ourselves that when everything finally settles down, THEN we'll have more time for the people we love.
But here's the truth...
TOMORROW IS SOMETHING WE HOPE FOR. TODAY IS SOMETHING WE ACTUALLY HAVE.
And that doesn't mean we should stop working hard or chasing our dreams.
It means we shouldn't forget WHY we're chasing them in the first place.
Call your parents.
Visit your grandparents.
Take your sweetheart somewhere special.
Sit on the porch with your children.
Listen to that same family story you've heard a hundred times.
And if somebody you love is sitting beside you tonight, don't wait for a special occasion to tell them what they mean to you.
BECAUSE THE BIGGEST HOUSE IN THE WORLD CAN'T REPLACE ONE MORE AFTERNOON WITH SOMEBODY YOU LOVE.
Conway Twitty left us some incredible music.
But he also left us a reminder that success isn't only measured in records sold, money earned, or property owned.
Sometimes it's measured in how hard we try to keep the people we love together.
And while Conway never made it home from that last trip, the love he poured into his family and the music he shared with the world still speaks to us today.
THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS A LEGACY WORTH REMEMBERING.
Rest easy, Conway. Your music still feels like home.
❤️ NOW TELL US, Y'ALL...
What's your FAVORITE Conway Twitty song?
And if you could have just ONE MORE DAY with somebody you love, what would you want to do together?
Let's hear those memories. Sometimes sharing them reminds somebody else to make a few more while they still can.

Y'ALL, MEET THE WNC Iron Sisters !!!🔥
NOW HERE'S A CREW OF WOMEN WE CAN GET BEHIND!!!
Right here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, there's a sisterhood of motorcycle-loving women who understand something this world needs MORE of...
WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN!
Friendship. Loyalty. Adventure. Community. And making some DANG GOOD MEMORIES together!
These ladies have even been involved in fundraising and community outreach.
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL SISTERHOOD! ❤️
And let me tell y'all why this means something PERSONAL to me...
As a kid, I had about 50 WOMEN, including my mom, gathered in our living room, encouraging each other and fighting against all odds to become the FIRST WOMEN FIREFIGHTERS EVER in the FDNY.
AND THEY DID IT!!! 🚒💪
Those women weren't just fighting for jobs. They were fighting for opportunity, respect, and a future where women could accomplish what others said couldn't be done.
I witnessed firsthand what happens when women LIFT EACH OTHER UP instead of tearing each other down.
THAT KIND OF SISTERHOOD CAN CHANGE HISTORY!
And here's something I've learned...
Strong women don't have to compete with each other.
Real friendship isn't about jealousy, popularity, or who's doing better.
It's about showing up, celebrating each other's victories, and standing together when life gets ROUGH.
THAT'S THE KIND OF SISTERHOOD BACKWOODS AMERICA BELIEVES IN! 🇺🇸❤️
🏍️ LADIES, WANNA GET INVOLVED?
Find WNC Iron Sisters on Facebook, FOLLOW their page, and reach out to learn about their gatherings and how to connect!
Because life is too short to sit around wishing you had more friends and better adventures!
MAKE THE FRIENDS. TAKE THE RIDE. SHARE THE LAUGHS. MAKE THE MEMORIES!
And remember...
REAL SISTERHOOD AIN'T ABOUT STEALING SOMEBODY ELSE'S SPOTLIGHT. IT'S ABOUT HELPING EVERY WOMAN FIND HER OWN!

HOW MANY RACING FANS DO WE HAVE OUT THERE?! CHECK OUT THIS #75!
Now THIS is what happens when racing, moonshine, and a little Southern history come together!
Take a good look at this beautiful #75 Huffman Racing machine, proudly sporting Sugarlands Shine and an impressive lineup of racing sponsors!
And here's what makes this partnership especially cool...
NASCAR AND MOONSHINE HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE!
Long before NASCAR became the motorsports giant we know today, some of the South's fastest drivers were hauling moonshine through the mountains and backroads.
They modified their cars with powerful engines and reinforced suspensions to outrun the law. Eventually, those same drivers started racing one another, helping lay the foundation for stock car racing.
NASCAR officially launched in 1948, but the spirit of those early moonshine runners never disappeared.
Fast-forward to today!
Sugarlands Distilling Company, founded in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in 2014, has become a familiar name in motorsports.
In 2018, Sugarlands became the Official Moonshine of NASCAR, and in 2023, the company even released a special moonshine celebrating NASCAR's 75th anniversary!
AND HERE'S ANOTHER COOL FACT!
Huffman and Sugarlands have been racing partners since 2022, with several Sugarlands brands appearing on Huffman's cars over the years.
Now look at that #75!
The mountain-inspired Sugarlands Shine graphics, those familiar faces on the side, and the incredible sponsor lineup make this one seriously eye-catching race car!
There's something pretty special about seeing a moonshine brand riding along on a modern race car when moonshine runners helped inspire the sport in the first place.
FROM RUNNING SHINE TO CHASING CHECKERED FLAGS!
That's Southern racing history coming full circle, y'all!
A big shoutout to Huffman Racing, Sugarlands Shine, and all the sponsors helping keep the racing tradition alive.
SO, RACING FANS... ARE YOU CHEERING ON THE #75?
And who's been a NASCAR fan long enough to remember some of the legends of the sport?

ART — ONE BIG REASON TO VISIT ASHEVILLE & WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA!
Asheville is known for a lot of things, but there's something special about this region that transcends politics, religion, lifestyles, personal preferences, and the things that sometimes divide us.
ART.
Art doesn't ask who you stand with, what you believe, or where you come from. It simply invites you to feel something, see the world differently, and connect with another human beings imagination.
And Western North Carolina is FULL of extraordinary artists!
Over the next few months, To Asheville & Beyond will be shining a spotlight on the art, artists, and creative spaces that make our mountains so special.
Our first stop? Black Mountain, NC!
We recently visited Red House Gallery & Studios, and WOW! What an incredible experience!
Paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry, woodwork, prints, and cards — all created by talented local artists.
And there's a beautiful story behind this place.
The Red House is home to the Swannanoa Valley Art League, founded in 1967. After decades of supporting local creativity, the organization moved into a historic building at 101 Cherry Street in downtown Black Mountain, opening its new gallery in 2024.
That move brought art right into the heart of downtown, making it easier for residents and visitors to discover local artists, explore rotating exhibitions, meet creatives, and purchase original work.
You can even browse and shop online through Red House Gallery & Studios!
Here's what I love most about art: Behind every piece is a person. A story. A lifetime of experiences. Sometimes joy, sometimes heartbreak, sometimes simply the beauty of these mountains.
When you purchase local art, you're not just decorating a wall. You're supporting a dream and taking home a little piece of Western North Carolina.
If you live here or you're planning a visit, put Red House Gallery & Studios on your must-see list!
Because our mountains are beautiful, but the creativity of the people who call them home is just as breathtaking.

Here’s one of my favorite murals in Asheville.
I stopped to actually read it one day while I was out doing some media work. And one part of it hit me differently:
“It’s OK, you’re OK. You can come down now. You’ve been screaming at the top of that tree for a bit too long.”
I don’t know why those words landed when they did, but they changed something in me for the better.
I’ve learned something about myself over the years: the things I process, confront, and deal with head-on are usually the things I eventually find peace with.
Maybe I resolve them.
Maybe I fight like hell to change them.
Or maybe I finally realize there IS no resolution, and the resolution itself becomes accepting that fact and moving forward.
I jokingly call it my Thor mentality.
Hammer time.
Deal with what needs dealing with. Break through what needs breaking through. Then put the hammer down and get back to peace.
But there have absolutely been times in my life when I’ve been stuck at the top of that tree.
Screaming.
Waiting for somebody to hear me.
Wondering why nobody did.
Not knowing how the hell to get back down.
And I think psychologically, sometimes we stay there because whatever put us in that tree becomes part of our identity.
We replay it.
We argue with it.
We try to understand it from seventeen different directions.
We wait for an apology that may never come. An explanation that doesn't exist. Closure another person may never be capable of giving us.
And meanwhile, we're still up in that damn tree.
Eventually, something has to change.
Sometimes victory isn't getting the answer.
Sometimes victory is realizing you don't need the answer anymore.
Sometimes strength isn't screaming louder so somebody finally hears you.
It's hearing your own voice say:
It's OK. You're OK. You can come down now.
That doesn't erase what happened.
It doesn't mean it didn't matter.
It means it no longer gets to decide where you live.
That brings me to resolve. Determination. Hope. And eventually, victory.
The entire piece reads:
“I tend to look back on that time with a mix of nostalgia and terror. There’s a part of me that is in awe of that girl, her total disregard for self-preservation, how she could run at the world headfirst, eyes closed, with no care for the consequences. But I also want to hold her in my arms, say ‘It’s OK, you’re OK, you can come down now. You’ve been screaming at the top of that tree for a bit too long."
— Florence Welch

The streets of Downtown Asheville are safer than ever.
Ever since the Tourism Board hired Batman and the Bat Family to patrol downtown, the numbers have been staggering.
Crime? Down considerably.
Gang violence? Practically gone.
White-collar crime? They don’t even make it past city limits anymore.
Parking violations? Batman sees EVERYTHING.
Okay, okay. We’re kidding.
This is apparently just another perfectly normal day in Downtown Asheville, where you can be walking down the street and suddenly find Batman casually making his rounds with a group of teenagers.
Or... maybe that’s what they WANT us to think.
Was this somebody dressed as Batman?
Was this actually Batman?
Is the Batcave somewhere under Pack Square? Or near Hendersonville?
We may never know.

SOME OF THE BEST FINDS ARE THE ONES YOU NEVER PLANNED ON!
One of our favorite things to do when traveling? Punch DISTILLERIES into the GPS and see what kind of trouble we can find along the way! 😂
Sometimes it's a little hidden moonshine operation that only Google seems to know about. Other times, it's a place with barely any marketing, a simple map listing, and products that'll knock your socks clean off!
And then there's a gem like Manchester Distillery in Manchester, New Hampshire! 🍸
What an incredible find! The whole experience was fantastic, the cocktail was downright amazing, and the bartender? Absolutely wonderful!
And you better believe I wasn't leaving without a bottle of that Sweetie Chocolate Liqueur! Oh my goodness, y'all… DELICIOUS! 🤤🍫
