The 'Traitor' is primarily formed in childhood as adaptive responses to trauma and dysfunction in order to feel safe - shaped by messaging and modeling of those around. Four books I didn’t finish — and why. First, C.J. Box and the Joe Pickett series. I actually love Box’s writing. That’s the problem. Joe’s wife is so whiny, whingy and disrespectful that, when I picked it up, I’d just gone through a divorce from exactly that sort of person. I thought: I ain’t spending another three hours talking to her. So C.J. Box, your problem, mate, is you write too bloody well. Then Don Winslow’s The Power of the Dog. Apparently brilliant. Couldn’t finish it. He wants me to learn bloody Spanish. Listen, I’m Australian. I can flat-out learn English. James Ellroy? Legend of noir. I was excited. Reading it was like scraping my head down gravel. Short. Sentence. After. Short. Sentence. No, mate. Use a bloody sentence. And finally David Mamet’s Chicago. I love Mamet. Didn’t love this. Twenty-six pages and I was done. Halting dialogue, a bunch of French, and it simply didn’t grab me. People say, “Give it longer.” No. I’ve got thousands of books I still want to read.
