Khan’s “overwhelming support” for Oxford Street pedestrianisation deserves a closer look.
The 2025 consultation report breaks down views on pedestrianisation as:
• 34% supportive/positive
• 32% supportive with conditions or caveats
• 27% opposed/negative
• 7% mixed or unsure
The headline “66% support” combines the first two groups. Almost half of that support came with qualifications. Whether those conditions are met matters.
The question itself introduced pedestrianisation as helping deliver the Mayor’s vision and regenerate the area, before asking people’s views. The surrounding material promoted safety, accessibility, investment and jobs.
That is favourable framing, and it gives reasonable grounds to question how neutrally the proposal was presented.
Then the consultation closing in January 2026 explicitly excluded revisiting the principle of pedestrianisation. Respondents were being consulted on the transport changes needed to implement it.
The criticism is that conditional backing was folded into a glowing headline, while the later consultation treated the underlying policy as settled.
Also, these were consultation respondents—not a representative poll of all Londoners or all Oxford Street businesses.
“66% supported it, including substantial conditional support” gives a considerably fuller picture than “overwhelming support”, as the Mayor claims.
If only there was a famous street people could get a bus or taxi from... 🤔

Went to Oxford Street to try out the pedestrian zone. Oh dear. Accessibility? Nah yet again.
I wonder how many people who were happy about this are now affected by it without realising.
My heart bleeds 🤣
Join us on Wigmore Street with the buses and the rickshaws if you like?

This is absolutely incomprehensible to us in France. Knowledge, purpose-built vehicule, vehicule built in 🇬🇧, charities... A Trade like this in 🇲🇫 would be mentioned in the French Constitution, and its Rights & Status guaranted by it 🚖🧾✋ – at Paris, France

Replying to @gblondon1 @willnorman
Taxis in #Paris are Official Accredited Transport for 🇲🇫 NHS, are considered emergency vehicules and therefore have access to ALL streets, roads, areas. A decision to exclude taxis from some areas would be unthinkable - and very probably invalidated by France's Highest Court. – at Paris, France

The Prime Minister is trolling us.
When you've run out of ideas, resort to taking the piss.
🤣🤣🤣
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.
The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.
But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.
That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.
It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.
This post (not the original poster, but the comments) just go to show what a wild west shitshow the port can be. The service customers are getting is nowhere near the standard it should be.
