MLS Matchday 32 Round-Up:
Nashville Win Supporters’ Shield, Messi’s Miami Stunned and El Tráfico Delivers Dramatic Comeback
Nashville SC secured their first MLS Supporters’ Shield, Inter Miami suffered a damaging defeat to the New York Red Bulls, and LAFC recovered from a two-goal deficit in a dramatic Los Angeles derby.
Across 15 matches on 24–25 October, MLS produced 47 goals as the battle for playoff qualification intensified ahead of Decision Day on 7 November.
Nashville SC clinched their first Supporters’ Shield with a 2-0 away win over CF Montréal. Sam Surridge opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, and Hany Mukhtar doubled Nashville’s advantage in the 76th minute. Surridge’s goal was his 18th of the season, while Mukhtar scored his seventh in six matches.
Goalkeeper Brian Schwake produced six saves to register his 14th clean sheet, setting a Nashville club record. B.J. Callaghan’s side has collected 70 points from 31 matches, with 21 wins and just three defeats.
Nashville also became the first club in MLS history to reach 70 points within their opening 31 fixtures.
With three games remaining, they require five more points to surpass Inter Miami’s single-season record of 74. Nashville are guaranteed home-field advantage throughout the MLS Cup playoffs.
The New York Red Bulls secured one of the weekend’s biggest results, beating Inter Miami 2-0 to boost their playoff ambitions. A seventh-minute own goal from Casemiro gave the hosts an early advantage, and Emil Forsberg sealed the win in stoppage time. Lionel Messi started on the bench and entered after 56 minutes but could not inspire a comeback.
Miami dominated possession with 62% but failed to convert their opportunities. Seventeen-year-old midfielder Adri Mehmeti produced an impressive performance for the Red Bulls, who remain above the Eastern Conference playoff qualification line.
Messi still leads the MLS goal-scoring charts with 25 goals, but Miami’s defeat has complicated their push for a higher playoff seed.
Sunday’s Los Angeles derby delivered another memorable encounter as LAFC recovered from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 with LA Galaxy. Joseph Paintsil scored twice to give the visitors a commanding advantage. However, Denis Bouanga reduced the deficit before Leo Walta completed the comeback.
LAFC also had two offside calls during a frantic contest at BMO Stadium.
The result secured LAFC’s place in the MLS Cup playoffs, although the Galaxy will be disappointed after surrendering their two-goal advantage.
Antoine Griezmann continued his remarkable MLS form, scoring as Orlando City drew 2-2 against New York City FC. Alonso Martínez opened the scoring before Griezmann equalised with a 32nd-minute header. Martín Ojeda gave Orlando the lead shortly after half-time, scoring his 50th goal for the club across all competitions. However, Jonathan Shore struck in the tenth minute of stoppage time to rescue a point for NYCFC.
Griezmann has now scored 13 league goals and contributed to goals in 13 of his first 15 MLS appearances.
The Frenchman became the second-fastest player in league history to reach 20 goal contributions, behind only Messi.
FC Dallas strengthened their Western Conference position with a 3-0 victory against San Jose Earthquakes. The match remained goalless until the 83rd minute, when Croatian striker Petar Musa scored twice, including a penalty. Musa now has 22 league goals, just three behind Messi in the Golden Boot race.
Dallas moved within one point of Western Conference leaders Vancouver, who suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat against Colorado Rapids.
Morgan Whittaker scored Colorado’s winner, while Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made seven saves.
The Whitecaps have won just once in four matches without the injured Thomas Müller.
Portland Timbers ended a seven-match winless streak with a dramatic 3-2 win over Charlotte FC. Ari Lassiter scored twice before Alex Aravena struck the decisive goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Teenage midfielder Eric Izoita contributed two assists and created four chances.
The win keeps Portland’s playoff hopes alive, though they remain four points outside the qualification spots.
Real Salt Lake produced another important result in the Western Conference, defeating St. Louis CITY 3-0. Sergi Solans scored twice, while Dominik Marczuk produced an outstanding long-range finish. St. Louis were reduced to ten players before half-time after Tomáš Ostrák received a second yellow card.
The defeat followed St. Louis’ US Open Cup triumph in midweek and prevented them from capitalising on Vancouver’s slip.
Columbus Crew defeated Toronto FC 4-2 in a crucial Eastern Conference encounter. Malte Amundsen scored twice, while Dylan Chambost supplied three assists as Columbus established a four-goal advantage. Toronto responded after Sekou Bangoura’s dismissal, but the hosts held on to their third straight league win.
The result moved Columbus to 38 points, one behind the New York Red Bulls, with Toronto remaining on 36.
New England Revolution secured an important 2-1 away win over Philadelphia Union, ending the hosts’ club-record 15-match unbeaten run. Dor Turgeman opened the scoring following an assist from teenage defender Peyton Miller.
Philadelphia missed highly rated youngster Cavan Sullivan with injury, while New England goalkeeper Matt Turner made a crucial save deep into stoppage time.
The result strengthened New England’s position near the top of the Eastern Conference.
Chicago Fire defeated Atlanta United 3-2, while FC Cincinnati secured a 2-0 away win over D.C. United. Austin FC won 2-1 against Sporting Kansas City, and Minnesota United held Houston Dynamo to a goalless draw.
San Diego FC and Seattle Sounders shared the points in a 2-2 draw.
Nashville have secured the Supporters’ Shield, but the Western Conference remains extremely competitive. Vancouver lead the West on 55 points, with Dallas just one behind following their latest victory.
The Eastern Conference playoff race is equally close, with the Red Bulls, Columbus and Toronto separated by just three points.
Meanwhile, Messi and Musa are involved in an increasingly intriguing Golden Boot contest, with only three goals separating the forwards.
With another round of fixtures scheduled for 28 October and Decision Day approaching on 7 November, the battle for postseason qualification and playoff seeding remains far from settled.

Ligue 1 Weekend Round-Up:
Rennes Go Top, Marseille Survive Seven-Goal Thriller and Lens Complete Dramatic Comeback
Rennes climbed to the top of Ligue 1 after a commanding win over Strasbourg, Marseille narrowly avoided one of the season’s most extraordinary collapses, and Lens made it three in a row with a comeback win over Paris FC.
Matchday eight produced 19 goals across eight fixtures, with the top-of-the-table battle remaining wide open ahead of Monday evening’s meeting between Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon.
Rennes delivered the weekend’s (so far) biggest result, beating Strasbourg 3-0 at Roazhon Park to move top of the table. Boulaye Dia opened the scoring in the 34th minute, and Sebastian Szymański doubled the lead seven minutes later. The Polish international completed his brace in the 61st minute.
The victory moved Rennes to 16 points from eight matches, one ahead of Lille and Monaco. Franck Haise’s side have now won five league matches and scored 18 goals.
Marseille produced the weekend’s most dramatic game, surviving an extraordinary late comeback to defeat bottom-placed Le Havre 4-3. CJ Egan-Riley opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and Timothy Weah doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute. Igor Paixão and Himad Abdelli added second-half goals to extend Marseille’s lead to 4-0 in just 55 minutes.
However, Josh Maja converted a penalty in the 77th minute before Lamine N’Diaye struck nine minutes later. Maja completed his brace in the 89th minute, reducing Marseille’s advantage to a single goal.
Le Havre also saw a late penalty appeal rejected following a VAR review. Despite the defensive collapse, Marseille secured their third consecutive league victory and climbed to eighth.
Lens continued their improving domestic form with a 2-1 victory over Paris FC, making it three wins in a row. Luca Koleosho put the visitors ahead in first-half stoppage time, but Florian Thauvin equalised in the 64th minute. Thorgan Hazard completed the comeback with an 84th-minute winner, converting Thauvin’s delivery.
Lens dominated the attacking statistics, registering nine shots to Paris FC’s four; the victory moved Lens to 13 points, just three behind leaders Rennes.
Monaco and Lille shared the points in a 1-1 draw despite the visitors playing the final 24 minutes with ten men. Ethan Mbappé opened the scoring in the 24th minute before Tanguy Nianzou received a straight red card in the 66th. Edan Diop equalised eight minutes later, but Monaco could not find a winner.
The hosts dominated possession with 64% and attempted 21 shots compared with Lille’s four. Monaco also recorded 2.35 expected goals, while Lille had 0.75. Both clubs remain level on 15 points.
Nice recovered from a goal down to defeat Brest 2-1 on Friday evening. Ludovic Ajorque gave Brest an early lead before Elye Wahi equalised in the 61st minute. Sofiane Diop scored the winner in the 83rd minute, but Nice required a dramatic stoppage-time penalty save from goalkeeper Yéhvann Diouf to secure all three points.
Diouf denied Kenny Lala in the tenth minute of added time, completing an extraordinary turnaround after his earlier mistake helped Brest score the opening goal.
Auxerre drew 1-1 with Le Mans, with Cameron Archer cancelling out Lucas Buades’ opening goal. Angers and Lorient played out a goalless draw, as did Toulouse and Troyes. Le Havre remain bottom of Ligue 1 with just two points from eight matches, having conceded 15 goals and failed to register a league victory.
Troyes sit 17th on five points, while Strasbourg sit 16th on seven.
Monday’s postponed meeting between PSG and Lyon could immediately change the top of Ligue 1. Both clubs enter the fixture on 14 points, two behind Rennes. A win for either side would take them to 17 points and back to the summit.
After eight rounds, only four points separate first-placed Rennes and eighth-placed Marseille.
