The endorsement of the European governing left for Lula's suspicious-looking victory, (along with praise from centrist twits like Poland's foreign minister Radek Sikorski), looks increasingly embarrassing as the object of their praise behaves like a Stalinist mobster.

7 AM in Israel. With 41% of the votes counted, Netanyahu’s bloc stands at 57 seats, compared with 47 for the change bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot. It is already clear that attempts to downplay the Prime Minister’s wartime achievements and obscure the opposition’s conciliatory positions have failed to convince a huge segment of the Israeli public. Beyond that, the alternative offered by the change bloc was deeply troubling to millions of Israelis: a narrow government relying on outside support from Arab parties whose leaders refuse to call Hamas what it is, a terrorist organization, and continuing to wage war with anti-Zionist parties effectively holding the keys to the government’s survival. At the same time, Netanyahu understood even before yesterday’s election that relying solely on a right-wing and ultra-Orthodox coalition would be difficult, if not impossible, in the next government. A huge segment of Israeli society is demanding change, and Israel cannot pursue essential reforms without bringing major parts of the nation on board. Eisenkot, meanwhile, delivered the victory speech of a political novice last night, rushing to declare the end of the Netanyahu era. To his disappointment, and that of his voters, reality is not playing out according to those expectations. He must now demonstrate responsibility, strength and leadership by announcing that he will join Netanyahu in a national unity government. The only alternative is another election in a few months, while Israel continues to face enormous security challenges, potentially as soon as the coming days.
