One thing worth learning is the difference between CORRELATION and CAUSATION. Correlation means that two things happen together, while causation means that one thing actually contributes to the other happening. For example, ice cream sales and cases of sunburn may both increase during hot weather. This does not mean that licking ice cream causes sunburn, both are influenced by the weather. We make this mistake more often than we realise. Someone succeeds after following a particular routine, and we assume the routine was responsible for the success. A business grows after adopting a new strategy, and we immediately credit that strategy without examining the other things that may have changed. The lesson is simple,just because two things happen together does not mean one caused the other. Before accepting an explanation, ask yourself what evidence connects the two events. Sometimes, the real cause is not the first thing we notice.
