Congratulations to all, but especially to @FritzLaylin who not only does exceptionally cool science, but also has been an amazing peer-mentor turned friend over the past 5 years! An incredibly well deserved honor and brilliant investment by HHMI!

I absolutely adore hospitals that spend money building a “healing garden” with comfortable benches and lovely water features and then immediately lock the doors so patients and families can’t access. Great design, no notes.

And honestly, people are much better at identifying what doesn’t work than knowing how to fix it. Ego aside, most “constructive feedback” is at best marginally more useful than just a list of problem areas
This 100% - especially when it involves grants. Even if the person seems like an a-hole, almost no one is going to take the time to give you feedback unless they care about you and your success. We all have way too much on our plates and it is way easier to just not say anything.
Replying to @baym
I suppose the point is that constructive feedback is about helping build the person, not necessarily their idea. Some of the most constructive feedback I’ve ever received has been “that is unrescuably bad and you’d do better working on something else”
I have often asked, can I just give you guys a $20 and we don't worry about accidental taxes on charges? Literally spent hours trying to get tax exemptions on cloud computing charges that had a total tax amount <$10/year.

I am now up to 24 emails for an incorrect $4.80 charge on my p-card. This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to reconsider my career. I take my responsibility over managing funds very seriously, but this is absolutely a waste of everyone’s time.
