ALT A gristmill was built on this site in 1820 by a Cherokee Chief name George Welch. A various times the gristmill was known as Poole’s Mill, Welch’s Mill, and Scudder’s Mill. In 1832 lands owned by the Cherokee were awarded to white settlers. The lot on which the mill stood was awarded to John Maynard. In 1833 Jacob Scudder, a brother-in-law to George Welch, purchased the property. Scudder owned and operated the mill, then known as Scudder’s Mill, from 1833 until 1868, when he conveyed the title to his grandsons. Following Scudder’s death in 1870, Dr. M.L. Pool purchased the mill. The mill came to be known as Poole’s Mill. An older bridge was used as a means to cross Settebdown Creek by people from Heardsville and Frogtown to access the mill.
