In case Twitter goes down, I wanted to make certain before it does that I expressed my sincere appreciation to the many wonderful people (and pets) I’ve met here over the years.
Thank you for the laughs, companionship, friendship, knowledge & support.
Peace!
The Hollywood Charity Horse Show is holding a silent auction to support local and national children’s and veteran’s charities.
Auction items include Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, comics and other Hollywood shows.
Where are all those @StarWars fans?
I have signed items in my charity auction‽

One of the EOD guys from my first deployment did the Army’s “enlisted to doctors” program.
He did 2 years of premed, 4 years of medical school, and then specialized as a trauma surgeon.
It cost him zero dollars.
He has no debt for medical school.
He’s set up for life.
I wonder if a system like this could be installed around buildings during a wildfire to help extinguish sparks, etc.
A high school girl in Mexico just won a gold medal for putting out fires with a speaker. It plays one deep, low hum and the flames die in about 5 seconds.
DARPA tried the same idea back in 2012 with a rig so big and clunky they never took it any further, and hers runs on a 12-volt battery and a speaker she can carry around.
Sound is just air being pushed back and forth. A low note at 30 hertz means the air around the flame is flipping direction 30 times every second.
Flames only exist in a thin layer where fuel vapor mixes with oxygen. Shake that layer hard enough and it keeps getting stretched thinner, the heat gets pulled away faster than the flame can make more, and eventually the flame rips right off the fuel. Whatever tears off is too cool to keep burning, so it just goes out.
DARPA's report put a number on how little it takes. Once the air at the flame is moving about half a meter per second, which is barely a breeze, the flame goes out, and pretty much any pitch can get there if you crank the power high enough.
Low notes just get you there way cheaper, because a speaker moves a lot more air on each push when the pitch is low. Two engineering students at George Mason figured this out by trial and error in 2015. They started with super high pitches, 20,000 to 30,000 hertz, and all the flames did was shiver. It only worked once they dropped down to 30 to 60 hertz, which is basically the bass on a hip-hop track.
Ángela Karime's build is a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, an amplifier and a speaker, tuned to 30 hertz. She named it Vortex Tech and talks about it shooting out little rings of air, and that's real physics. When loud, low sound gets pushed through a narrow opening, the air curls up into rings like a smoke ring, and those rings carry a puff of air way farther than the sound would get on its own. In her tests it put out small flames from about 2 meters away.
She went through five prototypes and over 100 tests in about a year, and she says it's put out burning wood, flammable liquids, electronics and cooking oil.
The cooking oil one is a big deal. Throw water on a grease fire and it flashes into steam and flings burning oil all over your kitchen, which is exactly the kind of fire where you'd want something that doesn't put anything into the pan.
Now, sound can't cool anything down, so a big fire sitting on red-hot fuel can come right back the second the speaker shuts off. The George Mason guys worried about the same thing in 2015, and it's why this is still a prototype for small flames and the red extinguisher under your sink isn't going anywhere yet.
Space might end up being where this matters first. Up there water floats off in blobs, while sound works the same with or without gravity, and acoustics researchers have already published experiments on fighting fires with sound on spacecraft.
She's still in high school, and she's already working on a version that spots a fire and puts it out by itself. The gold in Indonesia also came with a special award that gets her into another international competition.

Someone on Reddit built his wife a job search app.
She is a junior software engineer, and her job search had dragged on for almost 10 months. Tailoring a resume for every posting took ages.
So he built Dossier. It finds postings, then writes a tailored resume, cover letter and email for each job, using only facts from her profile.
It tracks every application from draft to offer on a board, and it runs on your own server, with a local AI model option, so your data stays with you.
She landed a job with it, so he open-sourced it for anyone in the same spot.
It is free at github.com/AienTech/dossier.

Hots&Cots has never been my full-time job. It’s been nights, weekends, and vacation days.
My day job has been almost 13 years at Microsoft, most recently as a senior iOS engineer. I’m part of this round.
So I’m open to two things:
* A full-time senior iOS role, building apps or the platforms behind them.
* Contract work. If you need an iOS, Android, or web app built end to end, that’s how I built Hots&Cots.
DMs are open. Hots&Cots isn’t going anywhere.
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg.
Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible.
This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

Wow, this is an even more plausible theory for the purpose of the ancient Roman Dodecahedron!
I think she is onto it here.
Again with weaving, but this time it's with metal as well, the demonstration shows a pretty convincing match to the gold chain work found in ancient gold caches. And it's a process that would naturally use all the different widths of the holes, for the drawing and stretching of the metal chain. She gives two different size examples in the linked complete video.
It's also an explanation for why it would have been found in Roman military archeological sites, as it would work not only for metal chain, but for cordage as well.

Since this apology I have deleted some of my posts about him. I don’t think he’s as bad as his one of his worst moments caught on camera. This is a much needed reminder that we shouldn’t read too much into a highly charged moment of emotion and make snap judgments about someone we don’t know.
I still stand by my initial assessment that she had every right to move him out of her way and didn’t need to ask nicely and it seems he actually understands that too.

I can’t go to sleep.
As a former medic, the event in Wainwright is the stuff of nightmares.
Before an exercise or on deployment you’re always thinking what’s the worst case scenario I might face.
You make plans in your mind for a hundred possibilities. You pack your kit for the most likely eventualities. You pray you’ll not have to put your more advanced lifesaving training to use.
If you’re lucky you won’t, but sometimes you do.
And sometimes, despite all the training, planning, and careful preparation, it isn’t enough. Sometimes you simply can’t be ready.
That’s not your fault. Do not blame yourself.
You can’t see the future and you can’t save them all. Do your best for the ones you can and be proud of that.
It’s ok to feel messed up. Ask to talk to someone, don’t let your thoughts or emotions tear you apart.
If you think something like this won’t affect you, don’t be surprised if someday down the road it does. When that happens, ask to talk to someone then.
Thinking of all the front line health care, fire, police and investigators doing gods work to help and protect those who need in the aftermath of today.
You’re not alone. Never feel like you have nowhere to go or have no one to turn too when it becomes too much. Help is out there.

Our campaign is continuing to get a lot of attention as Rep. Harris gives more interviews and MD-1 has been shifted from "safe-red" to "likely-red". I'll go on any news network or talk to any journalist about this race--left leaning, right-leaning, doesn't matter to me. It's the job of a candidate to get the word out as much as they can.
I want this job.
Rep. Harris made it clear he does not.
Tune in tonight on NewsNation at 10.
