I doubt Bob Gimlin will ever come clean about the Patterson-Gimlin hoax. I suspect it began with a promise to Roger Patterson on his deathbed to keep their secret. But over the years, other factors came into play. There’s money to be made from appearances, and I suspect his wife Judi wouldn’t let him confess even if he wanted to. Then there’s the humiliation of admitting he’s spent decades lying to people who admire and trust him. I doubt he’s prepared to face that. And consider last weekend’s Yakima Bigfoot Con. Gimlin was expected to appear, but reportedly delivered his opening remarks by telephone instead. Perhaps it’s simply his age, but I can’t help wondering if he’s deliberately avoiding public appearances where he might face uncomfortable questions about the recent revelations. But here’s the saddest part. Even if Gimlin came clean tomorrow with a full, detailed, unambiguous confession, I suspect most devoted PGF believers would find every excuse imaginable to dismiss it. For many, believing the film is genuine has become part of their identity. Even a confession from Gimlin himself might not change that. And perhaps, at 95, Bob is simply hoping he won’t live long enough to be forced to come clean.
