In 1986, 20-year-old Christopher Knight quit his job and drove into the Maine woods until his car ran out of gas. He got out and stayed there for the next 27 years. He lived completely alone in a hidden camp. The only words he ever said to another person were a simple “Hi” to a hiker who passed by. To get by, he broke into nearby vacation homes more than 1,000 times for food and gas, and he was never caught. During harsh winters he would wipe out his footprints and move around at night using careful survival methods to stay alive. In 2013, after 27 years in the woods, the 47-year-old was tracked down by police when a surveillance camera captured the man known as the “North Pond Hermit.” He was arrested but only served seven months for the thefts.

In 2014, a Chicago woman named Dawn Michelle Hunt thought she’d won the trip of a lifetime. She got an email saying she had won an all-expenses-paid trip to Australia. She was suspicious at first, but after looking into the company she decided the offer was real. The itinerary included a stop in China so she could pick up prize paperwork and some designer handbags she was supposed to carry on to Australia. At the airport in Guangzhou, security searched the bags and found more than 4.5 pounds of methamphetamine sewn into the linings. Hunt was arrested. Chinese authorities later said she had probably been used as an unwitting drug mule, but the court still convicted her, saying she “should have known better.” She was originally sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, which was later reduced to life in prison. More than a decade later she is still locked up in Guangdong Women’s Prison, and her family is still fighting to get her out.

In the 1970s, Mexican actress Lyn May was approached by a woman who said she could improve her looks with a simple injection. Trusting her, Lyn let the woman inject her cheeks with what was supposed to be collagen. It turned out to be a mix of cooking oil and baby oil. At first the results seemed fine. Then hard lumps started forming under her skin, and her face gradually changed shape and never went back to the way it was. Over the years she went through multiple surgeries trying to get the oil out, but each one only left more scars. The damage was permanent. The change left her so devastated that she later said she thought about ending her life. Decades later, doctors still haven’t been able to remove all of the oil from her face.

Marshall’s will left his entire $1.6 billion fortune to his son, and Anna Nicole was left out completely. She spent years in court arguing that he had promised her half of everything. The fight lasted more than a decade and eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court. In the end, she never received any of the estate.

Two companies that make lab-grown meat are taking Texas to court over the state’s two-year ban on the products. Upside Foods, which grows chicken in a lab, and Wildtype, known for its lab-grown salmon, have joined forces with the Institute for Justice to fight the law. They say the ban takes away consumers’ right to decide what they want to eat. Texas became the seventh U.S. state to prohibit lab-grown meat when the restriction kicked in in September 2025. State Senator Charles Perry, who wrote the law, pointed to worries about accurate labeling and possible contamination. But Paul Sherman, a lawyer for the companies, says the ban has nothing to do with protecting people’s health or safety.

A study in Botswana found that painting fake eyes on the backsides of cattle can help keep lions and other predators from attacking them. It sounds far-fetched, but the results were hard to ignore. Researchers tracked 2,061 cattle from 14 different herds over four years in northern Botswana, an area where livestock regularly run into lions and leopards. They split the animals into three groups: some got eyes painted on their rumps, others got simple cross marks, and the rest were left completely unmarked.

Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy was filmed flying a helicopter for the first time, with an instructor right there beside him. In a video that first blew up on June 2, 2025, the Grammy winner can be seen getting ready for takeoff and then taking the controls. The helicopter lifted off under the instructor’s watch and later landed without any trouble. A separate clip shows him jumping around afterward, clearly thrilled about the whole thing. The footage has been circulating again lately, giving fans another look at what the singer gets up to outside of music.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called access to the sea a critical issue for the country, which is the world’s most populous landlocked nation with more than 130 million people. He tied the need for a coastline to Ethiopia’s national security, sovereignty, and the future of coming generations. Ethiopia lost its own coast when Eritrea became independent in 1993 and now depends heavily on Djibouti for most of its trade. The government says it will keep pursuing sea access through talks and deals that work for everyone involved.
