LIFE LESSON 19 (CONT)
..Sometimes love means giving your best because you genuinely want the other person to experience their best life—even when you cannot control the outcome.
You can give your all and still discover that things didn't go the way you planned.
But at least you will know:
I tried.
I communicated.
I sacrificed.
I loved.
I didn't ignore the flickering light.
So, before the lamp goes off...
Check the oil.
Before the relationship breaks...
Check the love.
Before familiarity kills what effort created...
Start paying attention again.
Because sometimes, the person beside you isn't asking for a new person.
They are simply asking you to become intentional again.
I rest my case.
Jesus loves you.
LIFE LESSON 19
THE LAMP AND ITS OIL
Some days ago, I went to my grandmother's house. It was an old house, so they didn't have electricity all the time. They depended mostly on lamp light and candles.
But today, I want to talk about the lamp.
While I was sitting in the parlour, I noticed something. I had been staring at the lamp for quite some time when I realized that its brightness was changing.
The light was getting weaker.
At first, I didn't pay much attention to it. But after some time, it caught my attention again.
The same lamp began to flicker little by little.
And after some more time, it went off.
Now here is the interesting part:
The light didn't want to go off.
But because the oil was running out, it obeyed the law of lack.
And notice something:
It didn't go off all at once.
It gave signs.
The brightness reduced.
It flickered.
It struggled.
And eventually, it went out.
NOW, LET'S BRING THIS INTO OUR LIVES.
Let's take the light as love and the oil as the things that keep love alive.
Every love story usually begins with some form of attraction.
It could be love at first sight, but even when families disagree with the relationship, there was usually something about that person that attracted you.
Maybe it was their:
Conversation.
Sense of humour.
Questions.
Ability to listen.
Lifestyle.
Character.
Dress code.
Kindness.
Presence.
Or simply the way they made you feel when you were together.
These things become part of the oil that keeps the light burning.
But then something happens.
Familiarity begins to replace effort.
The conversations reduce.
The listening disappears.
The quality time becomes less important.
The questions stop.
The excitement fades.
The little things that once mattered are no longer considered important.
And slowly, just like the lamp, the light begins to flicker.
Sometimes the person affected will even give you signs.
They complain.
They ask questions.
They tell you what they need.
They may say, “Something has changed.”
They may ask for more attention, more communication, more understanding, or simply more effort.
But sometimes, just like I did with that lamp, we notice the signs and still do nothing.
We wait.
We ignore the flickering.
Until one day...
The light goes off.
And now everyone is suddenly surprised.
But the light didn't go off suddenly.
It had been warning you for a long time.
And when love goes dark, people can begin to live in that darkness.
Bitterness grows.
Anger grows.
Pride grows.
Isolation begins.
Trust becomes difficult.
And sometimes people begin saying things they never thought they would say.
All because the oil was not replenished when it was needed.
THE LESSON
Love is not sustained by feelings alone.
Love requires maintenance.
Love requires communication.
Love requires attention.
Love requires sacrifice.
Love requires forgiveness.
Love requires understanding.
Love requires choosing to keep showing up.
Love is not something you simply find and then leave unattended.
What can be built can also be destroyed if it is not maintained.
So when you notice the light becoming dim, don't wait for darkness before you act.
When your partner complains, listen.
When something changes, talk about it.
When the attraction begins to fade, don't pretend you didn't notice.
When something is wrong, work on it while you still can.
Because sometimes, what you call the end of love was actually the result of love being left unfueled for too long.
But there is also another truth:
You can give your best and still be rejected.
You can love sincerely and still not be loved back.
You can sacrifice and still lose the relationship.
And that is where Jesus Christ gives us the deepest picture of love.
He loved.
He sacrificed.
He gave Himself.
And yet He was rejected by many.
So love is not simply about getting what you want from someone.
