Very entrepreneurial food truck at the #marchforisrael today. I’m sure all the attendees were clamoring for a kosher cheeseburger or a kosher steak and cheese.

The analysis of @planet imagery on IDF tank movements from @Josh_H at the @nytimes is the most irresponsible article that the “newspaper of record” has ever published about Israel. I beg you to remove it before Hamas uses it to target.

Interesting puzzle from @xaqwg but I think the explanation of the factorial number system may be off by one place. The base 2 digit should have a factor of 1!, the base 3 digit have a factor of 2!, etc. Otherwise, you can’t write out odd numbers. open.substack.com/pub/thefid…

There are simpler ways to say, “Researchers evaluated the glow on a magnitude scale, where smaller numbers indicate brighter objects. The North Star, for instance, has a magnitude of plus-two. The team found that BlueWalker 3 registered as bright as plus-0.4.” (2/3)

Eg, it’s more than 4x as bright as Polaris.* Or that it’s about as bright as Saturn. Saying it’s in the top 10 is a good start. Or just saying it’s brighter than all but 6 star systems. *The scale is k-2.5*log(x), so a difference of 1.6 is 10^(1.6/2.5)=4.3 time’s brightness.(3/3)

At #AMorePerfectUnion , the @ArtinEmbassies exhibit at @amhistorymuseum , I was struck by this piece from @chrisunkim Data is long, a whole note, while facts are short and fears (in this case, CoVID) are shorter still. Don’t just settle for one fact. Get the whole picture.

Also, interesting that Kim, a deaf artist, is able to visualize music and find connections to other media. Diversity is a strength, not a weakness. And go see the exhibit before it closes this weekend! si.edu/exhibitions/more-perf…

Re-reading “I, Robot” by #Asimov - it’s amazing what he got right. He realized that AIs lack context for orders. In the book, robots don’t realize that the order was a life&death need. In the real world, we use prompt engineering so that AI can correctly respond to our requests.

That’s one way to describe Yale Cabaret’s decision to put their first show of the year on Rosh Hashanah. instagram.com/p/CxGJ2vQu-Aw/…

A more accurate @nytimes headline: @FAA Approves @SpaceX Next Steps for Starship. “The company conducted the investigation, identifying the causes of the failures... The F.A.A. reviewed the SpaceX report and concurred with the company’s findings.” nytimes.com/2023/09/08/scien…

The Trump defense team shows why everyone, even lawyers, will increasingly need data engineering. "We began downloading the government’s initial production on August 13, 2023. Two days later, it was still downloading. We then requested the government send hard drives...(1/3)"
Trump lawyers’ argument for a 2026 start date for the Jan 6-related trial has a good example of what not do for #dataviz so I fixed it for them. storage.courtlistener.com/re…… The original chart compared pages they need to review to the Statue of Liberty & Washington Monument. (1/3)

"...containing its initial production, which we received on [8/16/23]. Our tech[] vendor is now preparing to ingest the files into a document review database, but estimates such a large dataset will take several days to process." But that's just the start of using big data. (2/3)

The defense "need[s] to analyze, organize, and integrate those materials into a cohesive defense presentation." Solutions, eg @awscloud Snowball, bring data to compute, to sort info & find relevant parts, but they need data experts to inform them. (3/3) aws.amazon.com/snowball/

If you’re going to compare height of theoretical stacks of paper to physical objects, show the actual objects. Not just: here’s a 505’ by 505’ cube at this scale. Know your audience: For a judge, the relevant comparison for this case (11.5M) would be other cases, eg, (2/3)

150k for Enron criminal and 70M for Enron civil. The judge did not accept the Trump team’s argument and chose a date in March 2024. In addition to better data visualization, the defense also needs better data engineers, which I’ll cover in a thread tomorrow. (3/3)

Just completed the 5-hour Innovation Skills Accelerator course.innovate-us.org from @BurnesCenter It’s a great resource, with lots of worksheets and links to longer readings. And it’s free until Aug 31. Check it out while you can!

Rudy Giuliani is taking over the role of the Wicked Son: “Jews… want to go through that freaking Passover all the time. Man, oh, man. Get over the Passover. It was like 3,000 years ago. OK, the Red Sea parted. Big deal. Not the first time that happened.” nytimes.com/2023/08/03/nyreg…

Very interesting graphic showing @SpaceX Starlink satellites, which now make up a majority of all launches and all active satellites. Of course, 2023 only appears to be a decrease because half of the year hasn’t happened yet. nytimes.com/interactive/2023…
