Never ever forget that what you do matters.
I do. Often. Forget that is.
And it’s not because I don’t care. I do. A lot. Yesterday, while I was on the phone with Andrew, I got a message. I opened it while chatting to him. I can multitask. I’m good like that. I read it and started crying. It was from a reader. It was personal, so I can't say exactly who it was or what they said.
But I can say this… being kind might be suicide prevention.
I need you to read that again.
I stopped Andrew in the middle of what he was saying and asked him, “Why am I always crying? Why am I that guy?”… without letting him answer, I replied to myself, “It’s because I care. A lot.”
So I do care. I just forget that what we do matters far beyond the words we write. They change lives. They deliver hope in bucket loads. They make people feel seen, and heard, and happy. They do good things. And they inspire others to do the same.
There are 5 journos at @GoodThingsGuy. One of them is me, and then we have Tyler, our beautiful editor, and Nothando, Savanna and Karabo. There are more “goodies” that keep the publication doing good things. And every single one of them matters. They do ALL THE THINGS. They care so damn much. They are passionate about South Africa. And I am so incredibly grateful for all of them. Every single one.
Nothando wrote a story this week. One of our most-read. Goodson Mseleshe, a security guard in Durban, had just finished a night shift when he spotted a mom and her two young children stranded on a dangerous bend after running out of petrol. He had just R100 left in his pocket. His LAST R100. And he used every cent to buy them petrol so they could get home safely. When the mom offered to pay him back, he refused. All he wanted was to know they were safe.
Friends, this man didn't have much to give but he gave everything he had. This is the South Africa we believe in!
MORE TEARS.
My producers at eNCA selected his story for this week’s feature. It’s a big thing to get signed off for TV. We have to get full permission from all parties involved. Tyler does all of that. The team at Excellerate Security, his company, was so excited to have his story told on both Good Things Guy and eNCA. So excited, in fact, that they rallied the entire company to watch it on TV this morning. Everyone surrounded Goodson to celebrate him. Just because he was kind.
“I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.”
That’s a quote from Wonder. One of my favourite, favourite books and movies.
And today, Goodson got his.
A man who gave away his last R100 to help a stranger was surrounded by his colleagues, watching himself being celebrated on national television. I don't know if he ever imagined that his “small” act of kindness could lead to something so beautiful. I hope he felt like the most important person in the world today. For that mom and her two children, he was. And to the rest of South Africa, he is!
And I hope Nothando knows that her words made that happen. And Tyler knows. And Savanna, and Karabo, and Mattew, and Max, and Sharl, and Gabbi, and Kristen, and Elkan, and every single person who plays a part in getting stories like these out into the world.
That's the thing about kindness. We don't always get to see what happens next. Those little ripples. We don't know who needed that smile, that message, that helping hand or that story on a difficult day. But somewhere, someone might be holding on because of something you did.
So please, never ever forget that what you do matters.
Even when you sometimes forget it yourself.
Ja. I'm crying again.
Okay. Love you. Bye.
*Thank you to Justin Pillay for the photo. And to Excellerate Security for giving Goodson his standing ovation.

It’s FriYAY!
Which is one of my busiest days. And one of my favourites.
Our house is a flurry of activity on Fridays… alarms go off at 4am. Gotta prep for the day. And get my 3 cups of coffee in. That's all the coffee for me. No more after that. It's my "kick-starter".
I digress. Jammer.
Pups need to be fed at 6am. Their “school bus” arrives at 6:30am. Ja, our dogs go to school on a Friday… except they don’t do any maths, they just play ALL DAY. And they love it! They come home in the afternoon and then sleep for 2 days. And somehow, they know it's Friday. Normally, they sleep until 8am. Not on Fridays. They're up at 5:30am waiting for the bus. It's so bladdy cute.
Then I get ready for the day ahead.
At 7am, our Newsletter goes out.
When I started Good Things Guy, I made the decision to send out a Newsletter every Friday at 7am. Why that day and that time? I have no cooking clue. But 11 years later, we have never missed a Friday. It's mal. Every week we get new subscribers, and every week we get replies thanking us. Maybe I'm biased cause it's mine, but it makes me very proud.
Then, I am on eNCA at 8:15am.
Why that time? Cause that's what my producer says, silly. So that's what I get to do. In the make-up chair at 7:50am. And on air, on time. I bladdy love it. Dan and Masego are legends. The nicest of nice humans. And I get to hang out with them every Friday.
Then at 12:50pm, I'm on 702 and CapeTalk with Mandy Wiener.
My Mands! What a privilege. I think I've been ending off the Midday Report for 5 or 6 years now. She asked me to come onto her show one day, and I never left. Ha! We get to work together. Do talks together. Have lunches. Cycle. And be friends. She's the flipping best.
And in between all of this, I have emails, writing, pitches (bitches), meetings, driving, gym, eating, Duolingo and about a million other things.
A while back, I started talking about my **"I Get To" theory**. And it's something I try to practise every single day. We spend so much of our lives saying "I have to". I have to get up early. I have to work. I have to go to gym. I have to do this. I have to do that. What if we changed those two little words?
I GET TO.
I get to wake up. I get to work. I get to move my body. I get to spend time with people I love. I get to experience another day on this crazy, beautiful planet. It's a tiny change in language. But a massive change in perspective.
And ja, I know life isn't always sunshine and rainbows. There are difficult days. Really difficult days. There are bills and responsibilities and things that go horribly wrong. I'm not suggesting that gratitude fixes everything. But I do think we spend so much time worrying about what's next that we forget to appreciate what's happening right now. We're so busy trying to build a life that we sometimes forget to actually live it. And that's what I want to remind you of today.
Find the things that make you happy. The little things. The big things. The things. Make time for the people who fill your cup. Do things that scare you a little. Try something new. Be kind. Laugh more. And stop waiting for some magical moment in the future when everything will finally be perfect.
This is it. This is your life. Happening right now… and there is so much good to be found in it.
Fridays are busy. But how lucky am I to get to do so many things that I absolutely love!?
Anyway, now you know where to catch me today.
I hope you have the BEST bladdy FriYAY!
Okay. Love you. Bye.

Taking a moment to just be grateful.
I spent this morning reading through all the latest good news stories that the @GoodThingsGuy team reported on this week.
A different kind of "Sunday Times", if you will.
And it reminded me, like properly reminded me, of just how much good there still is in the world. And how lucky we are that we get to share them!
Stories of South Africans doing really lekker things. Of an anonymous Earth Angel making sure an SPCA can keep its vehicles on the road, of police officers going above and beyond to help others and of a woman who lost her job but went on to create something incredible because of a struggle her husband had faced for 20 years. Stories of big dreams coming true. Like Belinda Davids landing the role of a lifetime and a South African landscape designer being named the best in the business. And stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Of a school opening a kitchen that could change young lives, of people working every day to make Cape Town cleaner, of children finding happiness and opportunity through sport and of our wonderful elders sharing their stories and wisdom with the world.
So many good things. So many incredible South Africans. And all of it worth celebrating!
And all of them reminded me why I started doing this in the first place.
For 11 years now, I've had the privilege of reporting on the good things. Of finding the helpers, celebrating the heroes, showing you the healers and reminding people that there is so much more to South Africa than the headlines that make us angry.
But I don't do this alone. I have the most incredible team who spend their days finding these stories and making sure these beautiful moments get the attention they deserve. I'm so bladdy proud of them. We publish more than 100 stories a week. ONE HUNDRED!!!!
And ja, I know things are tough. I know there is a lot happening in our country that needs fixing. I write about those things too. We can't pretend the bad doesn't exist. But we also can't let it become the only thing we see.
2 things can be true at the same time. We can be both broken (in many ways) and absolutely flipping beautiful.
So much gratitude today. For my team. For the people who trust us with their stories. For every person who reads, shares or sends us a little piece of good news. And for you. For being here and caring about the good things with us.
It’s Sunday. And Good Things Guy is like a very happy Sunday Times!
Go on, read some of our stories. You can thank us later (for making you smile, bringing you hope, having you feel a little more proud or just feeling lekker).
Oh, and if you want to share your story, please pop an email to [email protected].
Okay. Love you. Bye.

Why must they struggle to raise funds. They are representing our country on the world stage. It's the same old same with our young talented athletes that represent our country internationally. Their families have to struggle to raise funds. Our minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture is useless. He spends most of his time having to account for wasteful expenditure and monies that are used for everything else except it's intended purpose. He ensures that he and his cronies can travel abroad to every sporting event. Government should be ashamed of themselves, but when these young people come home with medals, they want to take the credit. It's stressful for these young competitors to worry about funding. Government should really start doing better.
