Interesting. Did books you read at school enthuse you or turn you off them? The latter for me. Thank goodness there wasn't much scifi. I think "Z for Zachariah" was the only one.
How does the English Literature curriculum get decided, and what – if anything – can be done to shape its future? #LitInColour

Doing some research into building your own wind generators from common household goods for the next book... youtube.com/watch?v=wlMlEkR7… This is quite a fun video.
Useful for #scifi writers. How long are people likely to live in future without some paradigm-shifting change in medicine. Looks here like even if we cure cancer we'll get a lot more 105 year olds, but still few 120 year olds.
Ha! despite the fact the answer is yes, and it's how I make my living (the non-fiction stuff) I still don't say I'm a writer ;-)
True or false, #WritingCommunity:
You tell people you’re “a writer?”
I've got a tech article coming out next week on how the internet survived 2020 and the underlying concepts are so obvious and yet not-obvious & so far reaching I think I need to handle it in my speculative fiction because it's going to be the direction we move in #scifi

I did a trial last night and promoted a brand new writer.....
She went from 7 followers to 107
I would love to help other new writers on Twitter, so, if you are new, say hello and introduce yourself and I’ll retweet you
I’ve been on here a while now ☺️

I, & I suspect most writers, mix fiction & non-fiction (you have to pay the bills). I'm interested in how folk separate the two. I use a similar style, though the non-fiction has less pace, but I'm wondering if I should up the non-fiction pace. Although...

I think this may be my closest independent bookshop! About 10 miles away. And a gallery too! I'll have to visit

Does anyone else think it's a little unfair that Kong has an axe in one of the latest movie posters? #GodzillaVsKong
Do you enjoy cons or festivals? Literary vs genre fiction.
Genre Jargon: How the SFF and Literary Worlds Speak about Themselves and Each Other | @TheLincoln pwne.ws/3reii11
I find the discussion of what is #scifi an interesting one gravitational.substack.com/. According to Le Guin Fantasy & Speculative fiction are mutually exclusive groups that (presumably) sit under SF, covering everything, which pushes almost all traditional SF into fantasy category?
Or almost everything into speculative if you are ambitious about science or our future ability to create virtual worlds with different laws (in which case you can layer anything you like on top of our laws of physics)
I've been thinking on this post, which is interesting. The usual take is multiple worlds with different laws that you can hop between. E.g Diana Wynne Jones, His Dark Materials, Piers Anthony Juxtaposition. Most of those intersect with "our" world (the non magical one)...
We love when a story surprises you — when a high fantasy takes a hard turn into sci-fi, or other genre-hopping twists
Here are five excellent examples:

Some novels do it with different laws in the past, e.g. "magic has disappeared!" (Tepper's "Beauty", Strange & Norrell). Some do it with "aliens" (& I'm going to assert Slaughterhouse 5, which uses that, is the best genre-hopping of all time)...
