What is VAA? Why does it matter? Why are there guys that can throw 92-94 up in the zone for whiffs while some throw 95-96 up and it gets crushed? Let's talk about it⬇️🧵

A point a farm director told us on pro FAs: Signing "facility" arms is a gamble; they don't always work on stuff to prepare them for seasonal workload. Make sure as you "stay ready" that you ARE ready for a role assignment. Pro FAs don't have luxury of time before games!

"That release point is crazy" 🤯 Congratulations to Sam Whiting on signing with the @Mariners! 👏Check out his nasty four-pitch mix that led to 4 consecutive Ks in his latest Live ABs.

Sam felt great all year and didn't have arm pain once this season - big unlock for keeping him feeling fresh and available was helping him quantify/manage his workload while in gym Another win for @DrivelinePulse

Pumped to see what he can do with a full spring training and normal offseason under his belt👀

Modeling seam-shifted wake (SSW) is pretty tough - a lot more complicated than you’d think. Fortunately at Driveline we’ve been collecting paired pitch physics data and high-speed video for about a decade. Here’s a notable example of CH “non-Magnus maximizing” orientation.

With the Padres beginning their playoff run against the Cubs tonight, we wanted to highlight Yuki's performance throughout the year and some of his off-season training. It's been great working with him and also wouldn't be possible without the help of Ike, looking forward to watching Yuki in the playoffs!

1/ Availability is the first development metric. A pitcher who isn't on the mound can't get better. Three pro pitchers, one full season, zero IL stints. Here's how we managed their workload, why CW drove our decisions, and what it produced. 🧵

2 Interesting things to note here: 1. Great example of how seam orientation affects pitch shape if thrown the exact same way (diff between ST/CU) 2. Why is he now also throwing it harder? -Velo generally up since '22 -Extension diff on FB/CB in 22: 5" -Extension diff in 26: 3"
Talked to tonight's starter Joe Ryan about his new curveball grip and what it's done for him

The first place I look when figuring out why guys are throwing breaking balls slower than expected is extension, for a variety of reasons:
1
183
-Gripping the ball excessively hard -Making big changes within the throw to manipulate the ball (shortening up stride or manipulating posture) -Arm angle changes -Arm action changes Variety of ways to approach this, just know adjustments usually cause other downstream effects

Targeting velo early allows us to hammer pitch design and learning how to get hitters out later in the offseason when it matters most Luckily, Gabe already showed his ability to throw -8" vert splitters and 20" horizontal, just need to refine the rest of his arsenal🌪️

While his weight room workload raises again, we can focus on command while still targeting general throwing ability with plyos🏋️‍♂️ This also allows us to get more skill specific with velo work in his next phase, which should transition to in game velo effectively

Former Dodgers prospect Gabe Emmett has gained almost 7 mph in 3 months. How did he go from 88 to 94.9 in such a small window?🧐

Why pulldowns for his first velo phase? Gabe needed to push the ceiling on the skill side and become as good of a general thrower of baseballs as possible early in the offseason⬆️

Gabe was ripping pulldowns 1-2 times a week while still getting quality work in on those B days in between, without spiking his workload once. We were also able to get more volume out of his velo days because we built him up for it That helped him go from 91 to 95 in 6 weeks📈
