I love it that in the Iliad the word ὀλοόφρων means "meaning mischief, baleful," but in the Odyssey it means "crafty, sagacious (of persons)." That seems revealing of the different value systems in the two poems. logeion.uchicago.edu/%E1%BD%…

I mean, if there were a bunch of new ‘STEM Academies’ popping up whose graduates didn’t know basic physics, you might wonder whether the schools weren’t just trading on the cultural prestige of STEM to secure funding rather than genuinely preparing students for scientific inquiry.
Ok, so the classical school movement in the US is fake, since most graduates are not proficient in Greek and Latin upon graduation. Got it.

This is absurd. Wilson’s translation doesn’t replace anything. Old translations are still in print. New translations have been published since. The Greek isn’t going anywhere — which is all you would need, id you actually cared about this half as much as you claim.
That analogy gets overused but this is literally 1984 shit. Erasing the past, replacing past works with degraded Newspeak versions and destroying the older version.

Here is the advanced version, for those ambitious readers who want build a relatively complete ancient Greek library. A couple of comments to guide you. You'll find a list of the title, author and estimate date. I've grouped the works into 'book' versions that you should able to complete each one in a month. Hesiod's three main works can be found in one book. The same with Plato's first five dialogues. I've included part of Plutarch's works focused on the Greeks: Greek Lives and Hellenic Lives. Oxford publishes these with Robin Waterfield translations.

Today we are fighting about puns in the Odyssey, on request. How Odysseus' turn at "nobody" is a play on πολύμητις ᾿Οδυσσεύς (polumētis Odusseus)
What in the iliad or the Odyssey should we fight about today?
