Kobe on Leadership:
"Leadership is Lonely. If you are going to be a leader, you are not going to please everybody. You have to hold people accountable. Even if you have that moment of being uncomfortable."
Walk into any locker room and you're one of two things.
A fountain that fills people up.
A drain that empties them out.
Players know which one you are before you say a word.

“Negative experiences without teaching kill morale.”
This is such an important coaching lesson.
Players are going to fail. They are going to make mistakes.
The question: What do we do with it?

Win, and everything feels right.
Lose, and everything feels wrong.
That’s the RESULTS TRAP.
Coaches, don’t let the scoreboard do all your evaluating.
You can win and need to get better.
You can lose and be getting better.

Some wins aren’t worth the price you pay.
I’ve seen coaches win the game but lose the locker room in the process.
That’s a Pyrrhic Victory.
Winning matters. But never at the expense of your players, relationships, or culture.
Culture WINS. 🏆

Do you fall into the trap?
One of the biggest mistakes we make as coaches?
Assuming we played well because we WON.
Or played poorly because we LOST.
The scoreboard doesn’t always tell the whole story.

College athletes who get good grades...
They get hired.
"They know how to win, and they know how to experience loss."
They know commitment
They know work ethic
They know about teamwork
They know how to manage time
They win
Steph Curry on point…
“There’s losses, and then there are ways you lose that sting a little more.”
Each season requires the same thing:
- Build habits
- Develop chemistry
- Create a mindset
- Determine leadership
It’s the cycle of team development.
This is why you play good teams.
You put your team in a position to face adversity, get punched, and show leadership.
You find out what you are made of.
#Illini head coach Brad Underwood's opening statement after 95-91 exhibition loss to Baylor:
"That was awesome. That's really good to get punched. And then get punched again. And if the first half didn't end we would still be getting punched..."
Leadership starts with YOU. But it’s always about WE.
Chris Finch on Anthony Edward’s leadership progression…
1. Connection with teammates
2. We > Me
3. Lead yourself
4. Hold self accountable
5. Hold others accountable
6. Be consistent
Chris Finch on Anthony Edwards' leadership: It's been one of the transformations of our team, is his leadership. He's got an incredible personality, when you're around him, he's a guy that like people just naturally gravitate to. He's got a really infectious relationship with his teammates, and now he's learning like how to put it all together with the messaging and the the approach and the lead by example, and holding his teammates accountable and holding himself accountable.
It's been really fun to watch him mature and and everybody like kind of maturing alongside of him too, you know.

COACHING FACT:
You don't have a player-led team just because you named captains.
You have a player-led team when players hold each other accountable without the coach stepping in.
Sacrifice → Success.
“At the end of the day, we all want to win, so everybody has to sacrifice when you want to be a part of something special.”
– Jayson Tatum
That’s how champions are made. 💯
