The 4yo proclaimed this morning that he didn’t want to go “anywhere with grass”, and it transpired that what he was worried about was wet grass specifically, like dew, and he’s completely right. Grass is fine as metonymy but literal grass you want to take some care with.

Whatever “flipping a grunt” is, I think the baby is doing it right now

The part from the guy with the testosterone deficiency is just as striking. It made me think the Buddha just had low testosterone.

Kinda suspect the baby is fighting sleep tonight so he can keep staring at the ceiling lights. He kept getting mad when I turned them off, implausible as that sounds. He’s gonna love short form video content.

The lack of intentionality with which a newborn moves their arms is really quite something. I think it would be almost impossible for an adult to mimic.

Or rather, ironically I guess, it would take a very high degree of intentionality for an adult to mimic.

At Brighton Beech this summer I saw a cargo ship leaving NY Harbor with a load that was, to my untrained eye, kind of sparse. It made me wonder how much productivity is unlocked by, like, “pretty good” operations/logistics optimization, deployed at scale. Idk, maybe not much.

Missing the forest for the trees here where the number of fingers and toes is fine but try to make sense of basically anything else

Someone tried to throw away this aloe plant in our planter but it took root and has been doing very well. Don’t take this as a metaphor though, unless its certain death in winter serves your purposes.

4yo: let me tell you how many birds, the littlest number of birds, that is a flock. 2. Vagueness solved!

I need to find my way into a conversation about Nessa Barrett so I can casually drop this gem.

Opus 5.5 kept getting cut off but Astra has a pretty good candidate (haven’t reviewed carefully). I need to dig up my Facebook post from 5-10 years ago; the first half of this sounds familiar but I think the second half is new to me.

Embarrassed to realize we haven’t been lunch special maxxing while both on parental leave. There’s only so much you can blame on sleep deprivation, idk

Catalpa and honey locust seem too tropical for NYC but here they are

With our second child, once I was back at work and my wife was still on leave, we decided indeed she would take him during the weeknights. Except, out of a misplaced sense of solidarity I slept in the same room anyway. So we both had terrible sleep. I recommend not doing that!

In 9th grade, to help my high school quiz bowl team do better on poetry questions, I got this book, read it several times, and thus began a mild but sincere interest in poetry. I’ve had it back out to read to the baby. Thread with some of my favorites from the time.

I’m not sure I understood this one at all—I don’t think I even looked up concupiscent—but I think it was one of the few very odd poems my dad would quote sometimes, and the refrain is a banger.

“I, too, dislike it” had me right away. I had the sense this was a genius talking to me and, anyway, I liked to think I was interested in poetry.
