Katja Hoyer’s “Weimar” is a powerful and detailed reconstruction of a “stark and terrifying example of a collapsed democracy”. Brilliant review of WEIMAR in The Wall Street Journal @WSJ! 😁🥳 wsj.com/arts-culture/books/w…

Pedantic I know, but that's 11th armoured division, 8th Corp, they achieved all their objectives on the right flank of 30 Corp, liberating many towns along the way.
It's 2.15pm in Holland. Let's roll. The guns open up. The ground phase ("Garden") kicks off in Belgium with a massive 350-gun Allied artillery bombardment. XXX Corps armor starts its engines. To succeed, the tankers must race 64 miles up a single, narrow, heavily defended two-lane highway in less than 2 DAYS. There is NO margin for error - no margin for traffic jams or tactical pauses.

Gripped by Russian (2004) TV series Shtrafbat - 'The Penal Battalion: Their Life was Worth Nothing'. 11 episodes on the gritty dramas of life in a Soviet WW2 unit, fighting Germans & the NKVD. Subtitled, highly recommended. Sadly terminated as glasnost faded.

250th Anniversary! The Battle of Bunker Hill was the overwhelming show of strength the scrappy American rebels searched for to prove their worth to the mighty British. One British captain wrote that among his comrades of rank, “few had less than three or four wounds.” #History
