It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.
I’ll take @ellalangleymsic over Kacey Musgraves any day.
And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.
It’s so wonderful seeing an administration and municipality leading with empathy and support for its people.
My kid is out sick today and I was really impressed to see @NYCMayor’s team connecting the dots between school absenteeism and housing insecurity in this message I got from @NYCSchools. So many kids miss out on learning due to the challenges referenced below.

Now @AshleyMoodyFL. Why would I want to abolish the police when I want you arrested and in jail for stealing $10 million from sick kids? BFFR

Just made it clear to every voter in that primary that they’ve made the right decision voting for David. Goodbye and more importantly, good riddance.

They keep telling us the only way to win Florida is to ask for less, promise less, and expect less.
@AOC came down here with a different message. We’re not writing Florida off, and we’re definitely not lowering our expectations.

I backed Crockett in the Texas primaries. But you better believe Ima use everything I have and get all of my tribe in Texas to support Talarico and keep that demon Ken Paxton out of the Senate.
I'm backing Abdul, but if Stevens pulls this off, Ima do my best to ensure she wins over the Republican.
Why?
Because literal Eugenists and Fascists have full control over the government and are executing their plan to destroy the Republic and keep as many of us as sick as possible.
All this sore loser shit gotta go because, most importantly,
MAGA has to go.

What kind of Democratic Party do you want? One in which AIPAC / dark money floods primaries at the last minute to swing an election? Or one in which people fund campaigns in which the candidate regularly faces voters and not just friendly interviewers?

The Democratic Party is a vehicle that tens of millions of Americans use to try to improve their country, society, and own lives.
It does not belong to you.
If voters take the keys away from you because they don't like how you're driving the vehicle, that's your fault.
I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination.
Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your campaign.
Focus on building the party you actually support.
Political parties aren’t perfect, but they’re built by millions of people who knock doors, make calls, organize meetings, and fight for the values they believe in. If you don’t believe in the party, then don’t ask its members to carry you across the finish line.

I don’t know man, who is “the Democratic Party” if it’s not the voters?Democratic voters choose candidates, not party leaders. And party leaders need to listen to what voters are telling us - and right now they are demanding our party be bolder.

It was completely devoid of class analysis which allowed it to be used as a cudgel against politics and politicians that would actually improve the lives of marginalized people. See: if you don’t support Joe after he won South Carolina you aren’t listening to Black voices.
