A Note to the Boomers In the last ten years or so, the phrase ‘OK, Boomer’ emerged as a playful swipe at our generation — the updated version of “You’re such a square” that we once tossed at our own parents. Every generation has criticized the one before it, and every older generation has thought, “OK. Just wait. You’ll see.” We understood the overconfidence of youth and shrugged it off, knowing time and experience would temper those views. As a Boomer myself, I think it’s healthy to remind younger people that we worked hard for what we’ve got and that they’ll need to do the same. Every parent has an obligation to instil moral and ethical principles in their children, even if we ourselves didn’t always achieve the highest degree of success. However, there is a new reality that has soured the relationship between generations. I honestly thought that long-standing moral imperatives — the basic duty parents have to their children — would force many of us to re-evaluate our views and priorities. I expected we would adjust the old ways to better support our kids as they navigate today’s much tougher world. The fact is, we Boomers were the last generation where hard work and diligence could still reasonably deliver independence, home ownership, and the ability to raise a family. That world has changed. What is to be done? I can tell you this much: I’m not going to support anything that makes my kids’ lives harder. Full stop. Non-negotiable. You brought these children into the world, and it is your job to fight for them to your last breath. If you’ve forgotten that, it’s time to give your God damn head a shake. I still live in the same world as my kids. Even with pensions and investments, I can see how much more expensive everything has become. I talk to my children and hear how different the working world is now. I listen to the politicians and ideologues, and it’s clear our kids’ well-being is no longer their priority. So to my fellow Boomers: Stop and consider how lucky we were. We lived in a country that gave us real opportunities to build good lives. That same country — and our kids’ and grandkids’ futures — is now under threat. We are no longer the trending generation, and that’s how life goes. But attaching ourselves to policies or parties that work against the only people we are still morally obliged to support would be a betrayal I personally couldn’t live with. If you choose to keep telling yourself everything is fine and this is just how it has to be, you have my sympathy. That is not a regret I’d want on my conscience when my time comes. And as they say, the one thing you’ll never have enough of is time.
