It's been 20 years since I qualified as a ref, so I may be out of touch, but having your feet on the ground used to be required when you took a throw in. Have the laws changed? Because I see this all the time and there's no excuse for an assistant ref not to spot it.

I'm confused? The referees job is to decide whether the pitch will safely allow 90 minutes of football. They don't need to care about what the pitch is going to look like afterwards, the day after or in two days time.

This is always a tough decision for the referee. With standing water and more to come there is that risk of extra damage to the playing surface that impacts on the season ahead. Disappointing when you are leading 4-1. I always once started finished the game.

Unfortunately the referee has abandoned the game 15 minutes into the second half as there is standing water on the pitch. A bitter pill to swallow as we go 4-1 up. We will make an announcement on the return leg in due course.

Grant makes a very valuable and correct point. The 4th official is often occupied in dealing with occupants of the Technical area rather thansupporting the referee in the decision making process.
