🤖 As AI changes how information is produced and shared, how do we decide what to trust?
🌐 To mark Global Media and Information Literacy Week, #HDRFacts draws on the 2025 Human Development Report to explore why critical thinking matters in a world with AI.
🔎 The report highlights critical thinking as essential for assessing information and making decisions that reflect people’s values and circumstances. This means looking beyond access to digital tools to the skills people need to question sources, evaluate evidence and form their own judgements.
But individuals cannot carry this responsibility alone. The report discusses why stronger critical thinking skills must go hand in hand with a more reliable information environment, including platforms that amplify trustworthy information.
🤝 Together, these efforts can strengthen people’s ability to make informed choices and participate in shaping their future.

Our relationship with nature shapes our health, livelihoods, and the choices available to us. Acting for biodiversity isn’t only about limiting harm; it’s about expanding what’s possible for people. 🌍
At #COP17, the UN Biodiversity Conference in Yerevan, Armenia, UNDP’s Human Development Report Office will bring this perspective to discussions on the future of development.
On 28 October, Director Pedro Conceição will take part in two conversations drawing on the forthcoming 2026 Human Development Report and its new Nature Relationship Index:
🌿 An official side event co-organized by UNDP and the Government of Armenia, exploring how our relationships with nature can reshape the way we understand and measure human development.
🌿 A conversation at the Nature Positive Pavilion, Convener of hosted with the Nature Positive Initiative, exploring how measuring progress for people and nature can translate into action.
Follow our conversations on how people and nature can thrive together.
Ending poverty starts with understanding how people experience it.
On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, #HDRFacts highlights findings from the 2026 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).
Nearly 1.2 billion people across 108 countries face overlapping deprivations in health, education, and living standards. More than half are children. Rural communities also bear a disproportionate burden, accounting for 83.3% of people living in #MultidimensionalPoverty.
These findings underline the need for action that responds to the needs of different groups and communities, addressing the multiple barriers people face together.
Progress is possible: 33 countries have halved their MPI value in fewer than 15 years. Sustaining these gains means keeping people’s lives, dignity and opportunities at the centre of poverty reduction efforts.

In middle-income countries, 779 million people face overlapping deprivations in health, education, and standard of living dimensions. They represent nearly two-thirds of all people living in #MultidimensionalPoverty.

Who is being left furthest behind?
The 2026 global Multidimensional Poverty Index shows that children and rural communities bear a disproportionate burden of poverty.
The disparities are also evident between rural and urban communities. Rural areas are home to 83.3% of people living in multidimensional poverty, with a poverty rate of 28.7%, compared with 7.0% in urban areas.
Together, these findings underline why poverty reduction efforts must respond to the needs of different groups and communities, addressing the overlapping deprivations in health, education and living standards that they face.

How does a changing planet shape how we feel about our future? 🌎
Climate change can affect more than our homes and livelihoods. It can disrupt community ties, undermine our sense of security and affect our mental well-being.
On #WorldMentalHealthDay, #HDRFacts highlights a human development priority: supporting people’s well-being and their ability to shape their future. This means access to support and a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their lives and environment.
The forthcoming 2026 Human Development Report explores the relationships between people and nature, and what they mean for human development.

🌊 What can Small Island Developing States (SIDS) teach us about the future of development?
💬 A Thought Leaders Dialogue co-convened by UNDP and The University of the West Indies (UWI) brought together academic thought leaders and Human Development Report Office (HDRO) leadership to explore this question, bringing Caribbean SIDS perspectives into the 2026 Human Development Report process.
📖 In a new HDRO blog, UNDP Multi Country Office in Jamaica Resident Representative Kishan Khoday draws on the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa and a dialogue with Caribbean thought leaders to explore three areas for transformation: values, finance and policies.
🌱 🌍 The blog explores how SIDS are rethinking development in an era of climate and ecological crisis, offering lessons for building a more just, resilient and nature-positive future.

🏆 HDR Fact of the Week: A year of sporting milestones ⚽️
2026 has given us plenty of sporting achievements to celebrate. Beyond medals, titles and records, these moments can inspire people to discover new sports and pursue their own ambitions.
But turning that inspiration into participation takes more than motivation. It also requires creating the conditions for people to get involved.
This week’s #HDRFacts draws on UNDP’s 2017 National Human Development Report: Brazil to explore the relationship between sport, opportunity and human development.
🚀 Sporting excellence can inspire. Human development means widening those possibilities for everyone.

🌐🇺🇳 During #UNGA81 in New York, Human Development Report Office (HDRO) Director Pedro Conceição engaged with partners on advancing human development in a rapidly changing world, from harnessing digital transformation and knowledge to strengthening resilience, research and international cooperation.
🇧🇭 💻 Convened by the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) and UNDP Bahrain, “Bahrain’s Digital Transformation Journey” focused on the country’s forthcoming National Human Development Report and the policies, capabilities and partnerships needed to make digital transformation more inclusive.
🇦🇪 🧭 At “Knowledge as a Crisis Compass,” organized by the Permanent Mission Of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) and UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Arab States, discussions centred on crisis resilience: how societies and governments can anticipate, adapt and advance amid crises. The panel explored how available data and AI can turn knowledge into practical insights to support these efforts, with tools such as the Global Knowledge Index informing evidence-based policymaking.
🇨🇳 🔎 HDRO also welcomed a delegation from China’s Development Research Centre of the State Council (DRC) and the Center for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD), led by DRC Vice President Zhang Qi, for an exchange on research priorities, knowledge sharing and potential joint research on human development.
💡 Across these exchanges, a common priority emerged: ensuring that advances in knowledge, technology and policy translate into real opportunities for people to shape their own futures.
Thank you to our partners for these valuable exchanges. We look forward to continuing the dialogue.
