No Society Arrives at Tragedy Overnight Published yesterday, May 28, 2026, exactly thirty five years after the political transition that inaugurated Ethiopia’s post 1991 constitutional order, this article examines a question that the passage of three and a half decades has made more urgent, not less: How did anti Amhara violence become institutionalized, and why has it persisted across successive political eras? The timing is significant. As Ethiopia approaches another national election, the article looks beyond the immediate political moment and turns instead to the deeper historical forces that have shaped the present. This inquiry begins not in 2026, or even in 1991, but in the 1820s, with the missionary and colonial narratives that first gave shape to competing visions of Ethiopian identity and statehood. Drawing on a genealogical framework, the article traces seven historical periods through which the negative political construction of the Amhara evolved, from European racial taxonomies and Italian colonial ideology, through the revolutionary student movement of the 1960s and 1970s, to the ethno nationalist projects that culminated in the constitutional and territorial order established after 1991. It argues that the violence experienced by Amhara communities in recent decades was neither accidental nor sudden. It was prepared intellectually, institutionally, and discursively over generations. No society arrives at tragedy overnight. Long before violence manifests physically, it is shaped by the stories societies tell, the histories they choose to remember, and the institutions they build in their image. As Chinua Achebe observed, “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” Understanding how certain narratives became embedded in law, territory, and political discourse is not merely an academic exercise. It is a prerequisite for truth, accountability, reconciliation, and the possibility of a more just future. ethiopiancrisis.org/research…

Local residents in Arsi where mass killings happened a few days ago are saying anyone in the area who picked up and buried citizens killed a few days ago, wore mourning clothes, or was a relative of the deceased is being hunted down and arrested. Residents say the number of people arrested by local officials, accused of being 'collaborators with the enemy' and 'leaking information,' has now exceeded 100. Addis Standard confirmed this today and published news on it, mentioning that the number of detainees is over 50: It is now becoming crystal clear who is behind the killings?
News: More than 50 detained after burying victims of deadly attacks on #Orthodox faithful in #Ethiopia’s #Oromia Addis Abeba — More than 50 residents in #Shirka Woreda, Southeast Zone (formerly #Arsi zone) of #Oromia region, have reportedly been detained after burying victims of recent attacks and assisting the wounded, residents told Addis Standard, raising concerns about a security crackdown in the aftermath of the killings. The detention followed attacks by armed men in Chole and Birbo kebeles that left at least 48 people dead and more than 31 others injured, according to residents who spoke to Addis Standard. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church’s #Holy_Synod subsequently reported that 60 Orthodox Christians were killed in attacks on 20 and 24 October across two woredas in Arsi Zone. Attempts by Addis Standard to contact the regional communication bureau for further comment were unsuccessful. addisstandard.com/?p=60704

ETHIOPIA | A NATION IN CRISIS EIGHT YEARS OF LEADERSHIP. A COUNTRY ENGULFED IN CONFLICT. Under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia continues to face devastating violence, displacement and deepening instability. The Orthodox Church reports at least 60 Christians killed in one week. Fresh clashes have erupted in Moyale, while the war in Tigray continues amid escalating tensions with Eritrea. How many more civilians must die before those responsible are held accountable? Ethiopians deserve peace, security and justice not another generation consumed by war. #Ethiopia #AbiyAhmedMustGo #TigrayGenocide #AmharaGenocide #OrthodoxGenocide

First they killed 60 Amhara Orthodox in Arsi. Then THEY - the genocidal regime of @AbiyAhmedAli - arrested 100+ for burying them and the doctors treating the injured. Kill the victims, then jail the mourners and doctors. That's cover-up. #AmharaGenocide @USEmbassyAddis
🇪🇹 60 REPORTED DEAD IN ETHIOPIA: CHRISTIANS DESERVE MORE THAN CONSTITUTIONAL PROMISES ✝️💔 Ethiopia is one of the oldest Christian nations on earth. For more than 1,600 years, Christian communities have worshipped, built churches, preserved their traditions, and passed their faith from one generation to the next. Yet today, Christians continue to face deadly violence, attacks on churches, discrimination, and pressure for their beliefs. 🚨 OCTOBER 2026: 60 PEOPLE REPORTED KILLED According to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, at least 60 people were killed in two attacks in the Oromia region: 🔴 October 20 — 14 people reportedly killed in Merti district. 🔴 October 24 — 46 people reportedly killed in Sherka district. More than 20 people were reportedly seriously injured, and homes were burned. Responsibility for the attacks remains disputed, and those responsible must be identified through a credible investigation. These are not just numbers. They represent lives lost, families shattered, and communities left grieving. 💔 ⚖️ ETHIOPIA’S LAWS PROMISE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM Constitutional protections: • Article 11: Separates state and religion and prohibits a state religion. • Article 25: Guarantees equality before the law and equal protection. • Article 27: Protects freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the right to adopt and practice a faith. • International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 18: Protects freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. Criminal Code provisions affecting religious expression and worship: • Article 492: Addresses interference with authorized religious ceremonies and the desecration of places or objects used for worship. • Article 816: Penalizes certain public statements or conduct deemed blasphemous or grossly offensive toward religion and religious beliefs. These provisions must be understood in their legal context and applied consistently with constitutional and international human rights protections. 💔 THE REALITY EXTENDS BEYOND THE LAW Churches have been attacked and burned. Worshippers have been killed. Christians who convert from one faith or denomination to another can face rejection, threats, and social exclusion. In areas affected by armed conflict, vulnerable communities face continuing insecurity. No constitution can protect religious freedom through words alone. Authorities must protect civilians, investigate attacks, prosecute those responsible through fair proceedings, and ensure that every Christian can worship without fear. Ethiopia’s Christians are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for the right to live, worship, gather, and raise their families in safety. Sixty reported deaths must not become another forgotten headline. Pray for the victims and their families. Stand with Ethiopia’s Orthodox, Protestant, and Pentecostal communities. Demand justice, accountability, and equal protection for every person. ✝️ Constitutional rights must mean real protection. Religious freedom must be more than words on paper. #Ethiopia #ChristiansInEthiopia #AmharaChristians #OromoChristians #ReligiousFreedom #Article27 #EndChristianPersecution
