❗❗❗ A SCANDAL IN WARSAW! NO TO WHITEWASHING GERMAN HISTORY AND ERASING THE LUFTWAFFE’S CRIMES! German military vehicles are travelling through #Poland and have also appeared in our capital. Poland’s Ministry of National Defence points to military cooperation and exercises, while the German Embassy says the presence of soldiers and equipment in Warsaw is connected to anniversary celebrations and a “70 years of the Luftwaffe” exhibition. An anniversary is not, in my view, sufficient justification for bringing German military equipment to a display near the Polish parliament! The Bundeswehr’s official description of the anniversary exhibition makes room for technological development, disaster relief and overseas operations. There is not even a mention of the Luftwaffe’s crimes against the Polish people. Nor does it mention the Luftwaffe’s crimes against the British people (@Nigel_Farage). I regard this choice of subjects as a scandalous whitewashing of Germany’s military past that pushes its victims out of the story. In Warsaw, this is particularly disgraceful. #LUFTWAFFE - that was also the exact name of Nazi Germany’s air force, established in 1935 on Hitler’s orders and commanded by Hermann Göring. Under that name, German aircraft brought death to people across Poland and other European countries. That name cannot be detached from bombed cities, murdered civilians and Germany’s war of aggression. 🔴 WIELUŃ. On the very first day of the war, German bombers attacked a town with no military units stationed there and no anti-aircraft positions. Among the buildings they destroyed was a hospital marked with the Red Cross. Defenceless people were killed. 🔴 SULEJÓW. German aircraft bombed the town, while aircrews fired their onboard guns at fleeing civilians. People who were desperately trying to save their lives. 🔴 WARSAW. In September 1939, the Luftwaffe dropped hundreds of tonnes of bombs on the capital. Homes, churches and hospitals burned. During the Warsaw Uprising, German aircraft once again killed the city’s inhabitants. The bombing of St Casimir’s Church buried civilians, nuns and priests sheltering there beneath the rubble. 🔴 LONDON, COVENTRY, ROTTERDAM, BELGRADE. More cities devastated by German aircraft. More civilian victims. More families robbed of their loved ones and homes. All under the same name: LUFTWAFFE. The British people, too, paid a terrible price for the terror inflicted by German bombers. Deliberately omitting crimes, writing victims out of the story and sanitising the image of the perpetrators is another way of falsifying history. We must not allow anniversaries to be used to blur Germany’s responsibility for the Second World War. On Polish soil, such whitewashing would be a particularly vile insult to the memory of those murdered. Mr Ambassador: put on an exhibition in Warsaw about the Luftwaffe’s crimes against the Polish people! Show photographs of bombed hospitals. Show the ruins of Wieluń and Warsaw. Present survivors’ testimonies. Name the victims. Identify the German commanders and perpetrators responsible. That is the exhibition I demand at the German Embassy, near the Polish parliament. The memory of Polish victims must have its rightful place whenever Germany’s historical responsibility is discussed. The British victims must not be written out of that history either. NO WHITEWASHING. NO ERASING THESE CRIMES. POLAND REMEMBERS! 🇵🇱
