π¨ A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR KIDNEY CARE IN AMERIC
Today, October 20, 2026, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released its 2026 Kidney Care National Plan (KCNP), signaling a major shift in national kidney health policy.
The plan focuses on 3 transformative priorities:
π± PREVENT KIDNEY FAILURE (ESRD): Detect CKD earlier, slow its progression, and invest in preventive interventions, including evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle approaches.
π IMPROVE DIALYSIS CARE AND EXPAND PATIENT CHOICE: Promote innovation, better dialysis outcomes, home dialysis, and greater treatment options.
π« REFORM KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION: Expand access to transplantation, strengthen living donation, and improve safety, accountability, and transparency.
π MY TAKE: THE GOLDEN ERA OF KIDNEY NUTRITION HAS ARRIVED!
For decades, many of us have advocated for greater emphasis on nutritional interventions, including plant-dominant dietary approaches, to preserve kidney function and delay progression to kidney failure.
The new national plan represents an important policy opportunity to advance this vision.
The long-awaited Golden Era of delaying the transition from advanced CKD to dialysis through diet, nutrition, and comprehensive kidney-protective care may finally be upon us.
We believe the USA can lead this transformation, with the rest of the world following.
As we advance these goals, the @ESRDNetworks Forum of ESRD Networks and its nationwide network community have an important role in promoting patient-centered care, quality improvement, and meaningful patient choice.

The future of kidney care should not begin with dialysis. It should begin with prevention.

Pregnancy is hard work for the heart. For most women, the heart handles the strain just fine. But for some, the heart muscle suddenly becomes weak around the time of childbirth, leading to a condition known as peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM).
Affecting roughly 1 in every 2,200 births in the US, PPCM can be life-threatening, and currently, there is no medicine made specifically to treat it.
At The Lundquist Institute, Investigator Michelle L. Matter, PhD, and her team are searching for answers in our genes. Through the PERCVD Trial, in partnership with @WomansHospital, researchers are studying genetic changes that might explain why some women's hearts struggle during pregnancy.
