🎙80 YEARS AGO TODAY....🎙
Today we commemorate Operation VARSITY, the Rhine Crossing of 24th of March 1945. It was the largest airborne operation carried out by the Allies in a single lift during the Second World War, with the men of the British 6th Airborne Division and the American 17th Airborne Division tasked with capturing bridges and other strategic points around the village of Hamminkeln and the town of Wesel. 17,000 Paratroopers and airlanding troops were involved, with 6th Airborne alone using 440 Gliders of all types.
You can listen to both our VARSITY 80th Anniversary episodes now, with Mike Peters covering the Glider Pilot Regiment's involvement in the first episode. Norma Graham joins us for the second episode to talk us through the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in the last great airbone assault of the War......
Listen now on Spotify, Podbean, YouTube, Amazon Music and Audible.....@Gliderpilot44 @MikeHistorian
