Unfortunately, joining the preseason injury announcements with one of my own: a shattered right ankle.
Itâll be a rough few weeks/months, but surgery Wednesday, then a relentless focus on recovery.

The basketball world has a long memory.
The assistant you ignore today may become a head coach.
The administrator you dismiss may become an AD.
The young staffer you barely acknowledge may someday be making hiring decisions.
Treat people well because itâs the right thing to do.
It also happens to be really good career advice.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
Some of the most important opportunities in a coachâs career begin with conversations theyâll never know occurred.
Search firms.
Athletic directors.
Administrators.
Industry decision-makers.
An experienced agent isnât just someone you call when you need a contract negotiated.
They should be building relationships and advocating for you long before an opportunity exists.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
One underrated benefit of experienced representation: You donât always have to be the person asking.
More money.
Better terms.
Additional resources.
Contract changes.
An extension.
A good agent knows when to push, what to push for, and when preserving your relationship with the administration matters more than winning a particular point.

Contract advice for head coaches: Donât negotiate against yourself because youâre excited about the opportunity.
You can be grateful for the job AND advocate for your value.
You can want the job AND ask for protection.
You can trust the administration AND insist the agreement reflects that trust.
Those things arenât mutually exclusive.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
One of the hardest times to objectively evaluate a contract?
When youâve just been offered your dream job.
Excitement can make almost any deal feel like a great one.
An experienced agent has been through that moment many times before, and can focus on the details, protections, and long-term implications while you focus on the opportunity.

Coaches: Don't confuse being known with being respected.
Social media can create visibility.
Your work creates credibility.
Win.
Develop people.
Build relationships.
Treat people well.
Do what you say you're going to do.
Build a reputation that gets stronger when you're not in the room.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
Coaches often focus on what the school owes them if theyâre fired.
Donât overlook what YOU owe if you leave.
A restrictive buyout can limit your ability to pursue the very opportunity your success created.
Every head coach should understand both sides of the termination provisions before signing.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
A good agent shouldnât just help you get your next job. They should help you build a career.
Which opportunities make sense?
When should you stay?
When should you listen?
What should your contract look like?
How will todayâs decision affect tomorrowâs opportunities?
Experience matters because the best career advice isnât always about making the next move. Sometimes itâs knowing when not to.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
Commitment doesnât create character. The actions surrounding it reveal it.

One of the most important parts of a coaching search happens after the interview.
The calls you aren't on.
It's not who you know, it's who knows you.
âWhat are they really like?â
âWould you hire them again?â
âHow do they treat people?â
âCan they actually lead?
You can prepare for an interview in a week.
You're building your references for years.

Itâs difficult to know your true market value when you negotiate a contract every few years.
What are comparable coaches earning?
What protections are becoming standard?
What are schools actually agreeing to?
Where is there room to push?
An experienced agent who works extensively in your profession has the benefit of seeing hundreds of contracts and negotiations over a career.
That perspective matters. Don't leave money on the table.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
For coaches pursuing their first head coaching opportunity: Donât just ask, âCan I get this job?â
Ask:
Can I win there?
Can I recruit there?
Will the administration support the program?
Are expectations aligned with resources?
Can I build something sustainable?
Getting the wrong head coaching job can be far more costly than waiting for the right one.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
Head coaches: The biggest number in your contract isnât always the most important one.
A $2 million contract with weak termination protection can be worth far less than a $1.5 million contract with strong guarantees.
Salary gets the headline.
Protection determines what the contract is actually worth.
Head CoachđTraining Center retweeted
Assistant coaches who want to become head coaches: Donât spend so much time trying to look like a head coach that you stop being a great assistant.
Master your current job.
Make your head coach better.
Make your coworkers better.
Develop players.
Build relationships.
Take ownership.
Learn everything you can.
The best preparation for your next job is excellence in the one you have.
