A historic moment for the Hebrew University community. A landmark $250M gift from John Paulson — the largest in HU’s history — will help advance engineering, medicine, biomedical research, and trauma research. We’re proud to celebrate this extraordinary investment.
A Historic Quarter-Billion-Dollar Gift to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem! We are proud and delighted to announce the largest donation in the history of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: a landmark gift of a quarter of a billion dollars (US$250 million) from American philanthropist and investor John Paulson, announced this evening at the University's Board of Governors Gala in Jerusalem. This extraordinary gift will enable the University to expand its research and teaching activities in fields of national and international importance, strengthening its contributions to science, medicine, and Israeli society. The gift will focus on three key areas: - Establishing a new Faculty of Engineering, strengthening interdisciplinary connections between engineering, computer science, medicine, and the life sciences. - Advancing medical and biomedical research and education, including the development of innovative AI-powered medical training models. - Promoting research, rehabilitation, and treatment in trauma and post-traumatic stress, while strengthening the connection between academic expertise and the urgent needs of society. In recognition of the Paulson family's longstanding generosity and commitment to the University, its historic Mount Scopus campus will be named "The Alina and John Paulson Campus, Mount Scopus, Jerusalem." John Paulson, Founder and Chairman of the Paulson Family Foundation, stated: "Hebrew University is also among the most academically productive institutions in the world. Given its quality and productivity, I can think of no more deserving university for philanthropic support than Hebrew University." Professor Tamir Sheafer, President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reflected on the significance of the gift: "This gift enhances our ability to recruit world-class faculty, support outstanding students, equip laboratories with cutting-edge technology, and transform bold ideas into life-changing breakthroughs. This is far more than a historic act of philanthropy — it is a profound expression of confidence in Israel's human capital and a partnership in building our shared future." We extend our heartfelt gratitude to John Paulson and his family for their trust, generosity, and longstanding partnership. This historic gift marks a significant milestone as the Hebrew University enters its second century, empowering us to continue advancing groundbreaking research, educating future generations, and shaping the future of society in Israel and around the world.

Jerusalem’s iconic String Bridge lit up with the Hebrew University emblem to celebrate HU’s 100th anniversary and the start of the academic year. 🎓✨ Today, 23,000 students continue a legacy founded by Einstein, Buber & Freud—leading Israel and the world in research and innovation. #HebrewUniversity #HU100 #CentennialYear
The Hebrew University Celebrates 100 Years and Illuminates Jerusalem’s Chords Bridge (Gesher HaMeitarim) Ahead of the New Academic Year The Hebrew University of Jerusalem illuminated the iconic Chords Bridge (Gesher HaMeitarim) at the entrance to the city this evening (Saturday) with the university’s emblem, in celebration of its 100th anniversary and to mark the start of the new academic year tomorrow (Sunday, October 19). Approximately 23,000 students will begin their studies this year at Israel’s leading academic institution, founded by some of the greatest minds of the 20th century, including Albert Einstein, Martin Buber, and Sigmund Freud. Since its founding, the Hebrew University has set the standard for excellence in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and exact sciences. Its graduates include many of Israel’s leading doctors, lawyers, economists, and mathematicians. The university’s research touches every aspect of modern life, from space exploration to deep-sea discovery, from the invention of the cherry tomato to breakthroughs in cultured meat. Hebrew University scholars are global leaders in brain research, forensic science, psychology, and the health professions. In recent years, the School of Engineering and Computer Science has produced more graduates than any other research university in Israel, many of whom have gone on to shape the country’s high-tech industry and contribute to innovation worldwide. These graduates join the hundreds of thousands of Hebrew University alumni who, over the past century since its establishment in 1925, have helped shape and lead Israel’s public institutions, healthcare system, legal world, economy, civil society, cultural life, and academic community, both in Israel and abroad. This year, the university maintained its position among the world’s leading institutions, ranking 88th in the prestigious Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. Even on this joyous occasion, the Hebrew University community remembers and continues to hope for the return of the hostages still held, so that they may be laid to rest in Israel.
