What happens to the value we create? Last week, I had the opportunity to attend “Nachhaltig wirtschaften in turbulenten Zeiten” in Munich, an event centred around the idea of the Economy for the Common Good. One of the speakers was Antje von Dewitz, CEO of VAUDE, who shared how the company has managed to combine stronger environmental responsibility with economic success. I found that genuinely inspiring. But it also left me with one question: Can we go one step further? A company can produce more sustainably, treat people fairly, reduce its environmental impact and still become more profitable. That is undoubtedly progress. But when we talk about an economy for the common good, I believe there is another question worth asking: What happens to the value the company creates? The question is not whether companies should make profits. They should. Profit allows companies to survive, innovate, invest and grow. But what if part of that value was structurally designed to flow back into society and the environment, not occasionally, not through voluntary donations, and not depending on individual decisions? Because ultimately, I do not believe the future of our planet and society should depend solely on the goodwill of individuals or companies. Responsibility should be built into the structure itself. This is one of the fundamental ideas behind what we are building at Heldfor. With our Decentralized Company Structure (DCS), positive impact is not intended to be an optional activity added after a company becomes successful. It is designed to become part of how the company operates. As the business grows, the positive impact it creates should grow with it. Planting trees is good.
