"Today’s Tolkien enthusiasts seek to be ring-wielders, enamoured of the ring’s promise to assure ‘invisibility, control over other minds, and the prolongation of life’. They resemble Tolkien’s Saruman, whose epithet ‘the Wise’ is ironic. Saruman affirms: ‘We must have power, power to order all things as we will’. Seeing this tendency at work in post-war reconstruction, Tolkien declared in a 1958 speech, ‘Saruman has many descendants.’"

Oh, I do love Seamus Heaney. I think he speaks to that Irish part of my soul. And this is good to read as we remember the faithful departed.

“…the souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise, they did appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving us like annihilation; but they are in peace.” Wisdom 3: 1-3 (JB) #allsouls

The beatitudes are about more than inner disposition, vital as that is. The children of God have got work to do, called to be justice-seekers and peacemakers, flowing from inner holiness, which will provoke opposition from those at odds with God’s kingdom. #AllSaintsDay

''We need to be artisans of peace, for building peace is a craft that demands serenity, creativity, sensitivity and skill. Sowing peace all around us: that is holiness.'' Pope Francis, Gaudete et Exsultate, 89. #PopeFrancis #PapaFrancisco #PapaFrancesco

True.
On artificial intelligence, Pope Leo XIV says, “No one can be reduced to productivity, to cognitive performance, or to mere data.” The dignity of work is on the ballot Tuesday. Vote for workers in the age of AI.

NEW: Detroit Archbishop Edward Weisenburger, an ally of Pope Leo XIV, stood on a sidewalk in Clark Park on Friday holding a sign that read “Todos Somos Familia,” after days of reports that ICE agents were targeting the city’s immigrant neighborhoods. “I don’t really believe in a polite religion that maintains the status quo for people in power,” he told the Detroit Free Press. The vigil came eight days after twelve American bishops prayed over President Trump in the Oval Office, a moment the White House filmed and posted online. thelettersfromleo.com/p/detr…

The Solemnity of All Saints, which we celebrate today, invites us to share in the joy of that countless family of men and women who, following the Lord Jesus, have made their lives a gift to God and to their neighbors.

In recent days, a humanitarian operation has been carried out to assist the civilian population in the city of Oleshky. I hope that the cooperation between the parties, which made this necessary humanitarian act possible, will strengthen the desire for dialogue and lead to new concrete peace initiatives. Let us entrust to Mary, Queen of Peace and of All Saints, all those throughout the world who are suffering because of war.

Pope Francis: Here’s a magisterial teaching in my official capacity as pope that you don’t like Catholic: We are not bound to accept the pope’s merely personal opinions Pope Leo XIV: I’m voting in my private capacity as an American citizen Catholic: You ceased to be a private person when you were elected, you are the pope in everything you do

Pope Leo, by voting, has reminded the Catholic community of the “right and also the duty to use their free vote to further the common good” (Gaudium et Spes, 75). The church won’t tell you who to vote for, but there’s a lot in that little phrase to help you discern.

Last night, Russian “shaheds” struck a combined heat and power plant in Kyiv. In the Dnipro region, four electrical substations were hit in a single night. In the early morning, a Russian drone struck a combined heat and power plant in Shostka. Railway infrastructure in Dnipro and Kharkiv was hit as well. Russia also attacked a gas distribution facility in the Dnipro region. These Russian strikes have created a difficult situation with electricity supplies across our regions. Around 200,000 households in Dnipro and the region are without electricity. Another 80,000-plus households in the Kyiv region are also without power. Repair crews are working to deal with the aftermath of the strikes and doing everything they can to restore electricity supplies. The world sees that Russia is deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure every day. And everyone who does not want to see this Russian escalation spread further into Europe must help Ukraine. Strong steps that will really lead toward peace are needed – sanctions against the aggressor and new support packages for Ukraine. Thank you to everyone who is helping.

He beat cancer and then immediately went back to tweeting about how AI sucks. That's my pope 🙏

Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.

The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

Decisions affecting human life, freedom, and the use of force must always remain subject to effective, informed, and responsible human oversight. For this reason, artificial intelligence must be “disarmed”, and I encourage the States meeting in Geneva in November to take concrete steps toward banning lethal autonomous weapons.

Intelligent technologies must be directed toward the common good. They must never become ends in themselves or serve merely the interests of a privileged few. Rather, their development should foster solidarity and participation at various levels of the global community, ensuring that the benefits of progress are shared equitably, especially with those most in need.
