my very unofficial "attention-oriented design methodology"
i have been playing with the idea of using different ways to present stuff as boring as a listing announcement.
instead of adding more information, what if we simply made the existing information more satisfying to look at?
a few things I've been playing with:
- repetition: predictable movements create a rhythm that eyes can comfortably follow.
- symmetry: visual balance makes patterns easier to recognize and process.
- anticipation: a little "wait for it" moment, followed by the satisfaction of seeing something fall perfectly into place.
- seamless loops: no obvious beginning or end. The movement just keeps flowing.
there's a psychological concept called processing fluency: things that are easier for our brains to process often feel MORE pleasant.
and that pleasure might be just enough to make someone stay for another second or two.
on platforms like X, where dwell time is one of the signals used in content distribution, so those extra seconds can matter.
(I don't have enough data to prove any of this yet. take above as a hypothesis dressed up as a methodology.
if you think social media marketing is just about announcements, that's cute.
you have to know what you want to put into whose head. you should know when to announce, when to demonstrate, when to explain, when to compare, when to show receipts, when to tell a story, and when to get people to act.
otherwise, you're just running a noticeboard (is there any job more boring than this?)

Imagine an open listing process with published rules, and your money earns yield.

A small tip for projects entering the Chinese community:
Don't start with "你好 (ni hao)."
Three reasons:
1. In Chinese, "你好" is mostly a one-to-one greeting. If you're addressing a whole community, "大家好" sounds much more natural.
2. "Ni hao" is giving dragons, pandas, red envelopes, and kung fu—representations of "Chineseness", but not really local.
3. For Chinese people living abroad, "ni hao" can sound uncomfortable, sometimes even with racist undertones.
