Srivijaya is out in good and bad bookstores. A magnificent tale of a forgotten empire - Borobudur, Prambanan, temple diplomacy, wars, feuds, Chola invaders, itinerant monks, sailors and wily merchants. An ancient university and… a old“zero”. Links below. #SejarahIndonesia #india
An ancient city that watched the sky: Xochicalco, Mexico. Built after Teotihuacan fell (650 CE), its cave observatory & Feathered Serpent pyramid show ancient astronomer-priests tracking the calendar. Today, I’m tracking the skies too with my shot of Orion. 🔭 #Mexico #Astronomy
History needn’t be a difficult read. As Iwan Santosa writes in Kompas, Herald van der Linde chose narrative history “so readers can more easily follow the research.” His Srivijaya brings Indonesia’s first maritime empire to life for a wider audience. kompas.id/artikel/herald-van…
While Java built Borobudur, the Maya raised temples at Tikal and Calakmul. Different worlds, the same fascination. 👀
In Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology, visiting the Maya—again. Once a history nerd, always a history nerd.

It is incredibly delightful that there is a Nalanda Institute in Jakarta and it is engaged in imparting higher education and other cultural services to the community. A building in the campus is interestingly name ‘Gedung Balaputradeva’ keeping the Srivijaya-Nalanda connection alive. The Nalanda Copper Plates replicas deservedly belong there.

Unveiling history! 🇮🇳🤝🇮🇩
Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty handed over a replica of the 9th-century Nalanda Copper Plate to Nalanda Institute, Jakarta.
This historic inscription stands as timeless proof of ancient maritime diplomacy, cultural ties, and shared heritage between India & the Srivijaya Empire.
A Bodhi plant was also planted on campus to symbolize enduring bilateral ties 🌱✨

A wonderful evening at Erasmushuis in Jakarta, talking about monks, temples, pirates and queens. Full house for Srivijaya.
Very grateful to @ErasmusHuis and the Indonesian Heritage Society for hosting.

Reading two books with subliminal Indian connections with South East Asia. One on Srivijaya Empire of Indonesia by @HeraldLinde warms the heart. The other, a masterly work by @MattCampbell is blood curling account of the loot of Khmer antiquities & their eventual restitution. It reveals the greed of collectors and museums who are in reality thieves and looters yet masquerade as art connoisseurs. Both are highly recommended.
After years of research, talks with archaeologists and historians, a near-slide accident on a hill, and getting lost in Muara Jambi, the Indonesian book launch of “Srivijaya” at the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta. Full house.
