I saw someone recently say that C.S. Lewis was “literally incapable of thought,” which is as good a time as any to remind you that you need to be Lewis-maxxing. Some things are popular because they are good. Among these are Lewis, Tolkien, the Beatles, PBR, and Honda civics.

‘Jack-o’-lantern’ originally referred to a man with a lantern or to a night watchman.
In 17th-century Britain, people often called men whose names they didn't know by a common name like ‘Jack.’
unknown man carrying a lantern = ‘Jack with the lantern’ / ‘Jack of the lantern’

Or as the great philosopers/songwriters/singers Don Henley and Glenn Frey said in their version of an essay, "every form of refuge has its price" It's also a good song

In medieval tradition Alfred the Great was an emblematic figure of wisdom, credited with wise sayings and proverbs. His very name suggests 'Elf-wisdom', and the works linked with him often explore what wisdom means. He has a key role in my upcoming book... xitter.cf/UppsalaBooks/status/21…

Not everything in the world needs to be world-class. The American Dream isn’t just about George Washington, Andrew Carnegie, and Donald Trump. It’s also about Joe Sixpack, a stay-at-home mom, and the guy who runs the gas station in Bowie, Maryland.
Sometimes good enough is good enough. Here’s my defense of average >> washingtonexaminer.com/premi…
1. The tablet is a screen for everything, not just an occasional presentation
2. It reduces human contact, which is essential for teaching and for friendship
3. It reduces the use of the body and so narrows the capacity for memory 1/x

Why?
Would you favor prohibition on all visual aids: overhead projector, slide show, film strip, movie, televised program?
How do you feel about personal slate and
chalk usage?
Is this extension of Socratic problem w/ visualized symbolic thought or corollary to music problem?
It's already awful to deal with the the virtual assistant's voice when calling companies, especially the ridiculous typing sounds when it "looks'" something up. (C'mon really? You think this helps?) But this is next level manipulative.

It's fun to think about how if instead of devoting vast resources and human intelligence to the most dystopian life-negating shit imaginable we had spent the capital of industrial modernity on building socially vibrant life-affirming worlds centered on human dignity and value
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.

For all of human history, a familiar voice meant a real person was present. That connection is now broken. AI has eroded our trust in what we see. Now, it threatens to erode our trust in what we hear.
🇺🇸 Jack Dorsey’s new AI voice model Dessa is absolutely insane.
There is no way to distinguish it from a human, man … crazy.
Thats kinda cool, but many people will get attached to it and isolate from real humans even more. Many will get scammed on the phone, especially grandpas and grandmas.

This will deeply add to the loneliness epidemic by inviting people to depend on Dessa bots over human relationships. We don’t need this. We need embodiment. Go talk to someone.

Details: My politics are libertarian (in a sensible, adult way), and I’m an evangelical, like 1/5 people in this big country (but very few in the national press). I enjoy editing a range of views, and I live in Pittsburgh, a good vantage for nuanced takes on politics & culture.
