A landmark trial accusing Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 34 senior political and military figures of crimes against humanity had its first formal hearing in Istanbul today. Turkish prosecutors have charged 35 Israeli defendants, including Netanyahu and ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Israel Katz, with torture, unlawful deprivation of liberty, aggravated robbery, vessel hijacking and crimes against humanity in relation to last year’s Gaza aid flotilla. They are also accused of genocide in Palestine. The trial had its first formal hearing this morning following the issuing of arrest warrants in July and Turkish requests for an Interpol red notice in August. Charges are being pursued under universal jurisdiction, which allows countries to address international crimes occurring abroad. The case focuses primarily on incidents surrounding the illegal interception of boats from the 2025 Global Sumud Flotilla mission. On 31 August 2025, more than 50 ships carrying around 500 participants from 44 countries set off from Barcelona to break Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and deliver aid to those trapped there. The flotilla was subject to a number of drone attacks, most notably off the coasts of Tunisia and Greece, before being illegally intercepted by Israel in international waters. Those on board were detained and have accused Israeli forces of subjecting them to human rights abuses including rape, assault, degrading treatment, withholding of medical care and more. Turkey negotiated the release of hundreds of participants, including a Novara Media contributor, on charter flights to Istanbul, where legal and medical teams gathered evidence of severe mistreatment. “This trial is not just about seeking justice for the 101 victims represented in this case; it is a fundamental challenge to the doctrine of impunity," said the Global Sumud Flotilla legal team. "When states use armed force against unarmed civilians attempting to deliver life-saving relief to a starved population, individuals within that chain of command must face judicial scrutiny." The trial in Istanbul comes as prosecutors in Rome, Italy, expand an investigation into Israeli officials for the mistreatment of 50 Italian participants of Global Sumud Flotilla missions. Officials including Ben-Gvir, Katz, IDF chief of staff Eyal Zamir and 11 others are being investigated for suspected torture, kidnapping, personal injury, robbery, property damage and damage causing danger of shipwreck.

Netanyahu lost his majority today and in a week Trump will lose control of Congress. But both will remain in office. I predict their joint response will be a massive attack on Iran, which they hope will consolidate their domestic power.

Today, after confident predictions of victory for genocidal "liberal" Zionism, Netanyahu emerges as leader of the largest bloc, representing the true, honest, full face of genocidal Zionism that doesn't hide. "Liberal" illusions that this genocidal settler society is waiting to have its "democracy" "saved" are shattered. @SenSanders, @Ed_Miliband and other apologists for this evil regime will have to learn that that the problem is not Netanyahu but the very entity he leads, built on mass murder and mass destruction of Palestine's people.

A 23 year old Greta Thunberg is now the biggest headache for Netanyahu. 🔥 🇸🇪 Greta: “You jail protesters while the real war criminals walk free, fought election and get away with mass slaughter. Do you want to know who else did not get to vote yesterday in occupied Palestine? The hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the diaspora camps in Lebanon. We have been directly affected by the occupation since 1948 and have no state as a result. Where is our "democracy"?

I QT'ed @timeshighered because they're the ones who submitted the work for the award and are the responsible party. I don't think it's helpful to address the many other issues around the story here which I'm sure we can respectfully agree or disagree about. This is about the optics of an industry celebration weeks after a death that many people are still mourning while refusing to answer to basic questions over its own role.

Hi Helen, I've made it clear that this isn't a commentary on the merits or not of his work. Not least because I wouldn't presume to be able to judge it. No-one can because it wasn't published. Instead it formed part of a 63-page dossier to Liverpool John Moores which became the basis of an investigation into plagiarism, of which, as you know, Arday was cleared. This thread is instead about public trust in media when there is no mechanism for review or accountability and how the press can demand questions of others when it won't answer the most basic ones about itself. It's also about the even more simple issue of sensitivity towards family members and friends who might find the spectacle of a ballroom of celebrating journalists hard to stomach.

Basic human decency wouldn't permit me to be "very happy" if I was nominated for some trinket, knowing that it very needlessly costs someone their life. When the story of Jason Arday is told in full and remembered in history, the British "Journalism" Awards will be ashamed.
Very happy to have been shortlisted in the Specialist Journalism category in this year's British Journalism Awards for my investigation into Cambridge University professor Jason Arday and the extensive plagiarism in his PhD thesis #BJA2026

❗️Israeli-American brothers sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for serial sex trafficking Alon, Oren, and Tal Alexander—three brothers from a prominent Israeli-American family who once dominated high-society real estate and security circles in New York and Miami—were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on Tuesday for sex trafficking, conspiracy, and multiple counts of sexual abuse. Presiding US District Judge Valerie Caproni delivered the sentences in a Manhattan courtroom following an emotional, hours-long hearing where more than a dozen survivors delivered harrowing impact statements detailing years of systemic abuse. During the five-week trial, federal prosecutors laid out evidence demonstrating how the brothers exploited their immense wealth, high social status, and Israeli-American background ties to lure women to luxury properties—including estates in the Hamptons and international locations such as Tel Aviv—before drugging and violently assaulting them while incapacitated. While Tal and Oren operated elite luxury real estate brokerages, their twin brother Alon worked as an executive at their family’s security firm, utilizing their network to shield their predatory conduct. Judge Caproni firmly rejected the defendants' late assertions of innocence and unconvincing appeals for mercy, describing their actions as "monstrous" and likening them to "sadistic, misogynistic sexual predators." The landmark sentencing marks a dramatic downfall for the brothers, who maintained their defiant stance even as victims confronted them directly in court. Federal prosecutors had pushed for life sentences, citing the profound psychological trauma inflicted upon more than 70 victims who came forward to investigators.

Netanyahu and his allies have beaten the opposition in the Jewish Israeli vote. That's despite: - Presiding over October 7th - Netanyahu being on trial on charges of bribery and fraud - A cost of living and housing crisis - Attacks on the judiciary - Outrage over shielding ultra-Orthodox Jews from conscription - The Qatargate scandal - The disastrous Iran war - The Israeli establishment rationally believing that Netanyahu was making their state a pariah, and organising to get rid of him - The opposition overwhelmingly also supporting the genocide, occupation and illegal settlements If we include Ofer Winter's party - which pledged to support Netanyahu for prime minister, but hasn't crossed the threshold - then so far 51.5% of the non-Arab list vote went to the Netanyahu bloc. With 84.4% of votes counted, among the non-Arab list bloc, the opposition has only increased its share of the vote by about 1.6 points. Ben-Gvir and Smotrich stood separately this time, but are set to win almost the same combined number of seats as last time. The latter in alliance with Moshe Feiglin, who declared "Every child, every baby in Gaza is an enemy." The only significant shift is the surge in support for the Palestinian-led parties. But most of the opposition is opposed to working with them. Avigdor Lieberman, for example, has taken even more extreme positions towards Palestinians than Netanyahu himself. If they do a pact with the Palestinian-led parties, not only would it not last long, it would produce a huge right-wing backlash. That the opposition could on paper form an arithmetical majority with the support of the Palestinian-led parties - but absolutely will not - trashes the "well if the small minority of Palestinians who remained in Israel after the Nakba can vote, then Israel is a democracy for all its citizens" nonsense. A very likely prospect is that this will pave the way for new elections. The two right-wing parties which didn't cross the threshold would likely not stand again, boosting Netanyahu. The same huge mobilisation of Palestinian citizens of Israel would likely not transpire. Netanyahu and his allies would likely benefit from shock at the unexpected surge in support for the Palestinian-led parties. The opposition would be demoralised by its failure, and Netanyahu strengthened by having come out on top in this election. So it's best to bet on Netanyahu winning a coming election. What does all this mean? Any illusions that change can happen within Israeli society should long ago have been destroyed. The opposition would have continued the genocide, the occupation, apartheid and colonisation. But as Israel's support in the West collapsed, Israel's cheerleaders pushed the position that Netanyahu was the bogeyman, and that a shift in figurehead could allow the state to do a PR relaunch. Netanyahu isn't Israel, we were told. Well that's true in the sense that on many key issues, Israeli society is actually more extreme than Netanyahu. This baseless illusion is now dead and buried. There must now be a much more determined push for a total arms embargo and sweeping sanctions on Israel. Those arguing that Israel is something it plainly is not are now completely and utterly discredited.
