We are so proud to celebrate our partnership with Lippincott on the reimagined brand identity for NYC Pride! The inclusive new look uses two typefaces from our library, Knockout and Gotham. They lend a bold and direct, yet warm appearance. Read more here: typography.com/blog/typograp…

To the designers who have trusted their work to my alphabets, the students who’ve taken the time to get in touch, and the ever-growing community of people around the world who have shared my affection for the craft: I am so deeply thankful. ➔

I haven’t decided what the next step of my journey will look like, but I’ll be sharing things on @jonathanhoefler while the folks at Monotype take the reins here. Whatever comes next, I know it will involve letters, and I hope it will once again involve you. —JH

Apparently not one to hold back, Historian Nicolete Gray, in just two pages, describes sans serifs of the period 1832–1838 as “crude”, “earnest”, “serious”, “gaunt”, “heavier”, “clumsier”, “dour”, “too fat”, “lumpish”… 🧵

…“more threatening”, “lugubrious”, and made by an England that’s “awake to the conditions of unmitigated hardship,” “sternly evangelical,” and possessed of “tyrannical dogmatism” and “the will to face the dreariest facts.” !

I don't know how I’d never seen this lettering before, from one of the “type Kaufmann” 50 deustschemark notes (1948–1960). That is some fraktur.

As a teenager, when given an opportunity to play the pipe organ at York Minster Cathedral, I panicked and forgot all the music I’d ever learned and instead performed “Jump” by Van Halen

I’m very fond of Northwestern University Library Preservation’s instagram (nul_prescons) — today they wrote up a case study of adapting a binding for digitization. I love seeing what goes into these projects! sites.northwestern.edu/north…
This goes for mobile OSes generally. I have an elderly relative who’s resourceful and quick-witted, but ***constantly*** confounded by apparent UI dead ends, because some checkbox or button is outside the bounding box thanks to a 1.5x font size. 🧵 ↓
I have terrible eyesight, so I use Twitter’s largest font size (from their Display settings) and I can tell you no one is testing the interface with that setting.

Also not helping: visually prioritizing new features and promos above functionality. If your user is 81 and needs a ride to the eye doctor, this might not be the moment to confront her with an upsell for “Uber E”[ats], especially if the “no/got it/screw off” link is unreachable.

In Japanese, the Iroha is a perfect pangram poem from 1079, using each syllabary character once. 以呂波耳本部止 千利奴流乎和加 餘多連曽津祢那 良牟有為能於久 耶万計不己衣天 阿佐伎喩女美之 恵比毛勢須 It’s also an ordering device, like the ABCs, used in some contexts today. 5/6

One more thought here: designers, if you don’t give your designs nicknames, your clients will. This doesn’t necessarily go well.

I’ve been tweeting about ink traps, “daggers” (aka “light traps”), and thinking about other transmogrifications for saving type. And then this thing pulls up outside. Are there no strategies for defending vinyl against the elements?
