While I was in Egypt, one of the locals we were hanging out with in Cairo said this before we went into the Egypt Museum:
"Thank Allah for the French, because they came and saved the history of our people.
Before the French, we did not care. No one cared. It was just rocks in the sand. No one remembered our history.
But when the French saw the artifacts they were amazed and did whatever they could to save it and study it. They saved our history.
Now the people today, we know our history and we're proud to be Egyptian."
