The forced evictions of encampment residents on Hastings Street in Vancouver are a violation of human rights. (1/2)

1/2Because my friends and family know I'm obsessed with housing, they ask me questions. So yesterday, two different people (whom I adore and who are kind, caring humans) asked me some variation of, "But do you really just house people even though they do drugs?" Yes. Yes, you do.

2/2IDK how this idea that denying people living with addiction a basic human right is going to improve matters for anyone got so ingrained in our society. To me it defies basic common sense to presume that it would not be safer and better for everyone if people just... had homes?

TIL from 2006-2016: -median market rents increased 26% -average renter household income increased by 13% -social assistance (in NL, couldn't readily find aggregate national data and I have a paper due) rates increased by slightly less than 9%

And since someone is about to say something about using percentages: MMR: $680-$859 (CMHC) Renter income: $38,400-$43,400(StatsCan) Social assistance: $10,483-$11,410 ("Welfare in Canada, 2016" this is just for NL, couldn't find aggregate national data and I have a paper due🙃)

I'm so proud of the results of the Green Kickstarter Fund- $260K to 29 projects that prove small actions can = big impact on both the environment & tenants' quality of life! Shoutout to @bkclifford whose contribution to this work was absolutely essential. centre.support/the-centre-su…

This is a problem.
Only 26% of renters in Canada said they can comfortably afford their rent payments, with money left over, and a new survey shows that renters in units owned by large corporations are more likely to face poor living conditions. iheartradio.ca/virginradio/w…

Just saw a job posting for an executive director position at a local nonprofit. The low end of the salary range works out to $30k. The salary you need to make to afford the average rental apartment in St. John's is ~$36k. Why are nonprofits putting their staff in poverty?

Victoria's population density: 495 people/km2 St. John's population density: 244.8 people/km2 We built a sprawling city w/ a decades-long obsession with single-family homes. We need to reckon with that if we want efficient transportation systems and healthier communities.
Replying to @candicewalsh
I am in Victoria B.C. The bus system throughout the 13 municipalities that make up the Regional Authority is efficient , seamless, effective and well used by people. The population is smaller than SNL , Avalon North and CBS. Our pols should come take a look on how it can be done.

It's incredible how many times you get aggressively passed by drivers when you're cycling in St. John's only to end up at the same stoplight at the same time.

In which I break down just how things got this bad, and what we should do instead of what we're doing now
"With much chatter about the challenges of finding affordable (and available) rental housing, it seems important to ground ourselves in the numbers and think about how we can reverse this worrying trend." An Op-Ed by @HopeJ709 theindependent.ca/commentary…

Being a part of the board of SJSOWC is awesome. I'm grateful to get to contribute to the mission of this organization and support the crucial role we play in the community. If you have questions about our work or what it's like to be on the board, pop me a DM!
Being a member of our Board of Directors means helping us to shape our work, it comes with opportunities for learning, and it means being part of a diverse group of committed feminists who challenge and support the organization. Are you ready to be a part of this important work?
