Tailscale vuln that just dropped seems tailor made for the kind of red on red (or red emulation) hits that are almost never reported as exploitation ITW. Unique incentives in this side of the offensive market also change expected weaponization timelines and portfolio proliferation dynamics.

Retraction of reporting regarding novel exploitation of certain edge devices, because of initial mischaracterization of which of the many viable bugs on target chosen by the adversary in a given case, does not suffice as evidence against the proposition that this is the vulnpocalypse. But one should give credit to the shops willing to walk back where corrections are needed as understanding improves beyond first collect. It is sadly not always done, especially where intel is treated as marketing.

Recent political disputes over space based support from proliferated LEO constellations have emphasized how much depends on technical truth. Speed gating, and other key distinctions between commercial assets vice military operated architecture, are downstream of engineering decisions. Code is sovereignty here. And the quality of debate is quite literally deranged absent this technical truth, even before one layers on the pernicious distortions of propaganda in deliberate influence campaigns.

Y2K catastrophism tracing a direct psychological line to AI/SI doomerism hits the cyber intelligence profession harder than would be typically credited. Much of the earliest commercial cyber intel coverage from shops like iDefense went hard on projections of fears but too often untempered by continuity & resilience net assessment. The intel adjacent analysis supporting much of the worst case scenario arguments over hyperscale compute outcomes is of a piece. But there are real matters of concern here, demanding serious consideration and clear eyed methodological approaches.

Nothing so illustrates the erosion of vulnerability intelligence than the apparent widespread inability, or rather loss of prior capability, to understand and assess the engineering task array required for reliable portfolio weaponization, as distinct from PoC demonstration. And at what threshold even a partially reliable portfolio may be effective under what CONOPs.

AI filtered crowdsourced RF COMINT in urban areas, to extract human drama to feed the maw of the attention economy, is likely to complicate LE & emergency services in ways that are difficult to anticipate for those who are used to scandal control in a different tech stack.

Military historians are going to look back on the present period and struggle to explain why the anchoring bias to legacy programs and concepts was so severe as to literally demand the same platforms be extended for decades past any reasonable standard, and those that might be replaced only by simply wearing the skin suit of earlier activities.

Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.

Warwick cyber (in its earliest form) being cited in analysis of a frontier lab pre IPO disclosure filing is a kind of academic policy impact victory condition that few universities may ever claim. That it involves estimates of retrocausality is truly an incredible moment for theory building.

If one credits recent academic study suggesting the natural technical lead for Western frontier superintelligence is 12+ months, but halved by distillation, then one might suggest that adversary espionage has at least an even chance of halving the time yet again. But this is more likely to be jagged across improvement in ways that are inconsistent and hard to anticipate, further varying by character of the penetration. Especially as those curves bend sharper, faster.

“Exploiting y well hardened device does not make other devices z1…n more secure” is a bizarre assertion. Developing and defeating entire new classes of tradecraft on the highest investment targets absolutely has trickle down effects for everyone else in the ecosystem. It is simply too often lost in the morass of failure at less tightly pressed defenders and admins.

RTG’s CHOOH2 was a bit of remarkable foresight from the late 80s / early 90s positing then politically unthinkable adoption of ethanol based vehicle fuels (but assuming genetic crop modification for improved efficiency to be viable as a full petroleum replacement). It also became the dystopian driver for agcorp automated megafarms and associated rural displacement, setting in game conditions for Hardwired’s Damnation Alley and the nomad interior between isolated urban blocs. Like the shattered solar plants in the desert outside of Night City, it is the visible marker of green energy failures; evidenced by the importance of legacy fuels as strategic contests in the 2nd and 4th corporate wars. Further, it is an immediate tell for the hyperinflation that devastated that future America, with those prices 2-4x higher or more in legacy USD (although one can note the rare miss of predictive accuracy in assuming the euro would remain more highly valued.) The correct adjusted canonical price comparison to the current era would be upwards of $24 USD per gallon real world (when paying in gold or hard goods), more if trying to convince the seller to accept greenbacks. Biofuels were also not a policy choice, they were posited in lore as a crisis adaptation to the loss of the entire OPEC oil output following catastrophic nuclear weapons exchange in the Persian Gulf. It is still a range and performance reduced, costly cope that fundamentally altered land ownership, population geographies, personal automotive access, and many other things downstream. It is one of the most fundamental breaking points in the collapse of America as we know it, towards its devolved game state.
Fun Cyberpunk lore fact: energy and climate change are solved problems due to the existence of CHOO2, a sugar based, clean burning fuel that literally grows on fields So all their energy/climate problems are either there by design or because no one can be bothered to fix it

There is likely something important here at the deep biological level for addressing cognitive skew in national security intelligence tasks, and making better use of intuitions before grounding in formal methodologies.

ECC conspiracies at last hammered by the shoggoth. “…we do not believe it is plausible that weakened curves were selected”. As many of us have argued for many years, on evidence of the quietly strengthened DES S-boxes. America is built on strong cryptography, for commerce as much as for government.

Proposed AMX-30 UGV concept reminds one of a long vanished 1990 wargame, buying French tanks under arms embargo at overinflated prices, only to watch formations melt away in the first fight

Current impulsive emotional reactions on display seem to validate every Cold War concern raised about escalation risk by partners reliant on larger military capabilities umbrella. And why such discussions need must be held among professionals, vice the baying mob that seize upon symbolic brands without regard to real world OPCON arrangements.

Alignment debates for superintelligence have become such a parody that it seems like a lot of folks believe they can shackle humanity into the sanitized Demolition Man future through sufficiently censored compute. This seems like a bad bet.

Norinco surging new robotics production to “riot control” humanoid systems likely says much about Party expectations of near term future unrest, and the instruments of repression that it will seek to leverage across subject populations.
